Six-Seven weeks ago we purchased a new lab puppy. At ten wks, we took him to the vet and he went through a thorough exam as well as shots, wormer and heartworm meds. He was healthy and 23 lbs. About a week later he came down with a horrible cough and seemed very depressed and wouldn't eat. We took him back to the vet and he was given two shots and sent home with antibiotics and cough suppressant. He got better w/in 24 hours and seemed to be doing great. Last Thursday we can home from work and Max was acting very lethargic and didn't want to do much. We decided we would take him back to the vet in the am. At 5:00 am I heard him crying out. I got out of bed and thought he might have to use the restroom. He would not get up. He could not even stand on his legs. We rushed him to the vet. Parvo test was negative. He was not vomiting. They said he had digested blood in his stool and had a minor hookworm infection. Over three days he underwent 4 blood transfusions, 3 antibiotics and vitamin k. The doctors tried everything, but his intestines continued to bleed. He passed away July 4th only 12 wks old. The vet said he is stumped and has never seen anything like it. He did send tests off to see if it could be figured out, but we have heard nothing.

Do you know of any diseases that might have been inherited to cause such a thing? I might mention that Max was a house dog 75 % of the time and when I was at work three days a week, then he was contained in a kennel. He did not run around unless we were with him and we know of no poisons he could have gotten into. Rat poison was tested and was negative. We did not feed him table food of any sort and there were no obstructions or injury to the intestines. We are baffled and devastated by the loss of our baby.

Anyone have any ideas or have you heard of anything similar?:(

Oh, how sad! I'm so sorry to hear what happened. I have a 16 week old lab and I can't imagine what I'd do if something happened to him. I wish I had some idea of what could have gone wrong but I am not too up on doggy illness. Hugs.

Oh my...I am so sorry to hear the sad news. My heart goes out to you.
My 30-year old nephew recently got a female English Bulldog from a very reputable breeder in Florida. Sadly, she died at 12 weeks of age after a very similar set of circumstances to yours. The breeder and vets are all very baffled, but doing a lot of studies to see what happened to cause this. As of now, they are leaning toward the theory that she was born without a proper stomach lining. They atill aren't certain.
Again, my thoughts and prayers are with you.:(

I am so sorry for your loss. When you get a puppy, you are looking forward to years of companionship. How tragic to lose such a little one!

Actually, I had a dog, when I was a girl, who died just that way.
She had a thin intestinal/stomach lining, the vet said. She had several similar episodes of bleeding; after the first episode she was put on special food to reduce the likelihood of it happening, but it happened several times, and then one morning she was weak and shivery. She was gone by the time I got home from school. I still get upset when I think of her, and its been fifteen years.

Anyway, I hope that helps. I still don't know what causes the problem, though. But my vet had seen it before.

That is soooo sad. I have no idea what that could've been, but I'll ask Sadie's vet when we go next week. Your family and Max will be in our prayers...

:scared: Oh, I am so sorry to hear about your baby puppy.... how devastating..... I have no idea what that could have been. did you get your pup from a breeder or a pet store. If a breeder, I would call them and see what they have to say.

Its bad enough to lose a dog to old age, but a young pup... I just can't imagine. my heart goes out to you.
