We have tried several treats for Halligan. Unfortunately, he seems to have a sensitive stomach for some of these. We started off with not so great ones but the list is:
Iams puppy treats - no prob
Meaty Bones - no prob
Target brand treats - threw them up
Nutro treats - threw them up
Milk Bones - threw them up
Scooby Snacks - loved them, but gave him soft stools

Currently he gets DuraLife peanut butter biscuits and/or Blue Dog Bakery treats. He tolerates these ok. Any other suggestions? I want something that's not horrible for him. Thanks!

I like to use Mother Nature treats (Made by Natura, the makers of Innova). They come in all kinds of flavors.

Click Me (http://www.naturapet.com/brands/mother-nature.asp)

We are currently using the Peanut Butter recipe, but Dakota's other favorites are Carrot Cake, Buffalo Stew, and Beef Stew. :)

Another type of treat I like to use is Buddy Biscuits, by Cloud Star. They are shaped like little gingerbread men. You can see on in my avatar. :D

Dakota loves the Sweet Potato Madness

Two weeks ago I made 50lbs of dog biscuits to sell to help raise money for the rescue I work with. My dogs really loved me that day..LOL

What is the best way to store homemade treats? I have a jar I keep on the counter top but notice in a months time, even the store bought ones start to smell stale so I quit buying them in bulk.

I store everything in a tighly sealled container in the refrigerator.

Wellness makes a peanut one that mine love. They also enjoy the Solid Gold Cinnabones. Both would be available at a natural pet foods store.

I don't think we have a natural pet foods store. We have one in the mall, 2 independants that deal with primarily fish, and Target and WalMart. About 20 minutes away there is a Petco. We're kind of limited here. But I will look into maybe getting them on line. Thanks

I'm a big fan of Mother Hubbard treats - I usually get the tiny ones with assorted flavors all in one - just at the local petsmart. Chase loves them all, and I don't mind giving him several here and there because they're small...and they seem to be pretty good for him as far as ingredients I think.

Hudson loves those as well :D He also LOVES dehydrated liver treats (even will get his nails cut for them, lol) and anything beef flavoured :)

Buddy Biscuits! They absolutely love them and they have organic options and hypo-allergenic options (2) that contain no wheat, corn or soy!

I don't know if you have a Trader Joe's near you but they sell dog biscuits. Their own brand of natural ingredient ones and also from www.charleebear.com

My boys love Canidae's snap-biscuits. I also recently found Castor & Pollux Organix Dog cookies that they like. Neither of these treats have corn, wheat or by-products. Actually, I think my 2 will eat ANY treat, but I like to stick with healthier options.

I picked up some Buddy biscuits at Petco last night. I had forgotten that I had gotten these for him before and he loved them. I just wish someplace in town had them. Oh well, guess I'll go to the next town a little more often. Thanks for the suggestions.

I feed baby carrots as easy, healthy treats. They're available in every grocery store, and you don't have to feel guilty about feeding too many.

I also like dehydrated chicken breasts (I've seen a couple different brands).

I freeze green beans and carrots, they get apple slices (and other fruits) and chicken jerky. I try to stay away from "biscuits" although they do occasionaly get one before bedtime. Nutro has one that is just lamb and rice (no wheat, etc.) or I use the Wellness ones.

Hi Everyone,

I recommend veggies, fruits, and pieces of cooked meat as treats, excluding grapes/raisins and onions. Of course, fruits and veggies provide things that the highly processed commercial foods could not possibly contain. I am now studying phytonutrients- those vital ingredients that are just as important as vitamins and minerals, if not more so. These nutrients are crucial to optimal health and usually come in the form of fruits and veggies. Again, a study in Europe showed that pets receiving table food in addition to commercial kibble lived, on average, 3 years longer than those that didn't. This is easily understood when we grasp the critical importance of these phytonutrients. This is not rocket science. :)

As usual, any manufactured dog treats should be free of the "big 4"...all gluten (wheat, barley, rye), dairy, soy and corn. Many of the negative reactions to the various treats described above can easily be explained by the offending "big 4" ingredients. Most food manufacturers do not make their treats the way they make their main foods. Nutro is a good example. Although they do make some that are "clean", most contain wheat, corn gluten meal, etc. Solid Gold makes a couple good ones that are rice-based.

You simply have to shop around and READ ALL LABELS. It takes very little of the offending ingredients to trigger reactions like allergies and GI upset. Think "peanut allergy" and how little it takes to cause serious reactions in people. Thank Goodness the food reactions in dogs are rarely acutely fatal like that but small amounts can keep those ear and skin problems going.

I hope this helps,
John

this is what we use for treats. commercial treats are expensive, and my dogs seem to enjoy real food better. occasionally i buy dehydrated liver treats because the cats like it, too..

We do meat only treats ourselves too, plus the ones I make. But too much carbs for Calvin = yeasty ears. So, dried chicken and beef rounds is often stuffed into the kong. I avoid fruits for Calvin too, because too much sugar can = yeasty ears too.

We have been giving Klaus and Lola Solid Gold's Cinnabones too. They seem to love them.

We also do baby carrots.
