Salmon oil every day
Plain nonfat yogurt everyday
A multi pet vitamin everyday
Ester C every day
and of course...plenty of love...:D
lake labs 06-11-2006, 08:35 PM :) lovemylabby, thanks for the good tips, we give our 2 one of those, i guess ill go get the rest. lets get this thread going:brow:
Just lab 06-14-2006, 04:36 AM Glucosamine definitely saved Bear from and old ski injury in his shoulder, which developed arthritis when he was 9. He could not put weight on his front shoulder. It was so hard to watch, I thought this was going to take him away. :tissue:We put him on glucosamine twice daily and anti -inflam. Two months later he was off the inti-inflam and hasn't needed it unless we'd take him for big hike, which we don't do anymore...:D
miskeira 06-14-2006, 07:04 AM My guys get all that plus Chrondrition (sp) and MSM which works along with Glucosamine, plus they get Prozyne.

Remy my almost 12 year old, Stevie my 10 year old and Darby my 9 year old just get the G/C on their food.
I start the G/C when they're approx. 4 months of age.

skoochi 06-20-2006, 09:59 PM At 10 years old, Socket just has her Senior kibbles. We haven't had to give her any suppliments. She is in fabulous shape. She just went in for her yearly shots and the vet couldn't believe she was 10 years old.
vieve27 10-15-2006, 09:04 AM Hey, just reserecting to wonder what form do you give the glucosamine in? Liquid or pill? Human or made for pets? Where do you get it?
Also wondering what Prozyme and MSM are?
Also for those that feed salmon oil, liquid or pill?
My dog is only on flax oil and a multi vitamin, but I want to add more.
Thanks for the help!
andromelas 10-18-2006, 03:03 AM msm ismethylsuflonylmethane, another supplement, it is often combined in the same pills for glucosamine chondroitin, if you buy the pills for humans,
see your local gnc or target for supplements
andromelas 10-18-2006, 03:04 AM proyme is a canine supplement that helps them digest the nutrients in food, it is available from your vet or pet supply store
MISS LISA 10-18-2006, 11:46 AM Interesting thread..
All of ours (not just our senior) get Glucosamine, a digestive aid (for the RAW diet), fish oil and Vitamin E.
We also do supplement with non fat yogurt, apple cidar vinegar and C - as we remember.
3dognite 10-18-2006, 05:16 PM Hmmmm... my oldest is 9 1/2, but it's difficult to consider her a senior, as nothing about her has changed... other than the white hairs ;) She had OFA evaluations at 2 years, so we know she should be sound. No supplements here, but I make sure she gets plenty of protein in her diet.
Wenzss 10-18-2006, 06:00 PM all our dogs over age of 5 get glucosamine,- if arthritis is an obvious issue with them they get arthramaaxx (liquid) if they are not particularly symptomatic or if its precautionary they get tablet form.
all dogs get Vit C (buffered) vit E, salmon oil, apple cider vinegar, bromlein, yoghurt, acidophelis.
Depending on the individual dog they may also get other herbs/supplements such as: dandelion, milk thistle, quercetin, boswellia, alfalfa, arganine, glutamine, flax seed oil etc..
we take in mainly seniors and some have longstanding health issues that we deal with.
sgjohnson 11-04-2006, 08:28 PM Sorry to hijack, but we treated ourbaby as a senior. Anyway, I'd like to know how many of you have looked at CoQ10. Expensive, but one of the best supplements I know. I take it myself. Would reccomend it highly!
sgjohnson 11-04-2006, 08:33 PM but I make sure she gets plenty of protein in her diet.
and 3DK - so glad you are with the current knowledge that seniors actually need protein. ;-)
Laurie 12-03-2006, 09:06 AM Fudge gets 1000mg of Evening Primrose Oil/daily for his skin/coat...it stops his skin from becoming dry & itchy. W/o the caps, he scratches a lot.
greilly 12-04-2006, 08:09 PM Glad to see there's a chat board for senior dogs. I recently rescued a senior and I love her as much as if I got her as a puppy. There's something to be said about the love from an older dog!

Puppies are so cute :) ...but, personally, I love the wisdom & mellow spririts that my 2 have!
They're just so smart & easy going...
Good luck w/your Senior!! I'm sure she knows what you've done for her:)

Isn't the truth!! I had never known a senior until we got Bear and his affection is so completely and unabashedly genuine!! Takes my breath away sometimes.
Why do you guys feed the non-fat yogurt? Is that for calcium?
Bear (9) gets CG every day. Pill form, wrapped in a tiny bit of american cheese.

I can't speak for the others but my vet recommended a pro-biotic unsweetened/flavoured yogurt for fighting certain kinds of bacteria, etc....

labbielove 01-07-2007, 03:19 PM I have a 9 year old Lab. He loves to run, but somtimes gets overworked to the point where his back legs get stiff and he limps for about a day or so. Are there any supplements that someone could recommend for this? Also, I have heard competing theories on heating pads, does anyone have an opinion regarding this issues as well?

You can start your Labby on a Glucosamine /Chondroitin supplement. It helps to maintain optimal joint funtion. I use Cosequin DS made my Nutramax Labs. I have used it for quite some time on my 14 year old Sheltie with excellent results. I also use it as a preventative measure on my 4 year old Lab. You may also want to consider supplementing with Salmon Oil. This is very high in Omega 3's, not only great for skin and coat, but also helps with inflammation as well as overall wellness. Here is their website for you www.nutramaxlabs.com
I would also have your Vet take a look at him. He can prescribe an anti-inflammatory med for pain when your Lab is having bad day. The one that I like the best is called Metacam.
Good Luck to you and I hope your Labby will find some relief. :)
4pawslove 01-14-2007, 01:45 AM My 14 1/2 year old seems to be getting slightly senile. He has just starting pacing a little in the and sometimes barks in the air. He's stiff when he first gets up but is very determined. He is just starting to walk like an old mare---slow---but he is very determined. He still climbs up on his couch and loves to go for walks and does well going around a very long block (as long as the weather is cool). He gets right in the middle of the other dogs when they are playing until they knock him over. His coat is beautiful and shiny. He's a lover with a grey beard and grey feet. Any suggestions for supplement for the nighttime episodes.
My 12 1/2 year old just died of a heart attack but my 11 1/2 year old is in great shape except for the obvious cataracts.
labbielove 01-16-2007, 07:30 PM I have followed your advice with the yogurt and my pooches seem to love it. I mentioned this to a fellow dog owner and they said that dogs should not be given any dairy products. Has anyone heard this and are there competing views on this issue? Thanks!

I give yogurt to my dogs every morning! :) Just about a tablespoon of plain nonfat yogurt. They have never had a problem with it. If you offer it in a small amount, it should be fine.
I agree though, dogs should not consume dairy products in large amounts.
