View Full Version : Switching back to Iams!

After being convinced that a better quality food would make my lab a healthier dog, i researched brands and decided to change to the Chicken Soup for the Soul line of adult dogfood. Molly did fine on it (mixed it with iams, slow change, yada yada), so after the small bag was gone, went and got a bigger bag to continue with. Well, Molly developed the worst gas I have ever had the unpleasant priveledge of being exposed to! In addition to lethargy and losing her shiney coat (according to DH). She gave new meaning to the SBD (silent but deadly) variety....
So, we are switching back to Iams LB after this deluge of awful gas and general lethargy. She seemed to feel ok, but even after her BMs were solid, they were yellow! (like chicken in the food?) and stinky. Just after starting to mix Iams back in the mix, she is farting less, super playful in the mornings (like she was before the new food), and shinier, with regular looking poop.
has anyone else had this happen? DH says "you can kill them with kindness", and I think maybe i was trying too hard to "do the right thing" when she was just fine with the food she had to begin with. Or, maybe it was a bad batch of food? This all occured after about a month of new food.

Feeding a food your dog does well on is far more important than public opinion. I'm glad she's doing well! :)

Also, just because the food you switched her to didnt work out doesnt mean there arent others out there that will. However, if you are happy with Iams and the dog is doing great then you have no worries:)

exactly! there is no such thing as the perfect food for all dogs. each dog will tolerate and do well on different foods.

The reason I switche from Diamond to Natural Life was because of the gas. Diamond makes the Chicken Soup for the Soul dog food.

You know, it seems like I looked at the food once & wasn't impressed with the ingredients. But, for the life of me, I can't remember what was in it....
I feed Solid Gold Hund-N-Flocken to my girls, and I've fed it to all of the fosters. The only gas problems I have had in dogs were in ones who had worms (it was the worms), and it spiffed up a lot of coats, too.
3dognite is right, though. It's just important to find a food that works well for your dog. I changed my cats from Iams to Innova, and they actually has less dandruff on the Iams. They have to stay on the Innova, though, because the male cat needs the cranberries in it. It seems to do just enough to balance out his urinary tract....
