Levi is now almost 6 months old. He's been on ProPlan for his entire life...switched over to ProPlan adult about a month and a half ago. He looks great and has a nice coat, but he gets the runs a lot and eats tons of grass. So, I thought I'd switch his food to Canidae. First I am wondering if this is a good food and second how long should I mix the two foods together before going entirely to Canidae? Also, how long should I wait before expecting improvement in his stool?

Canidae is reputed to be a very good food. We recently tried it and went back to our Diamond Lamb and Rice, as our results were better, but there are many folks who love it and their dogs have lovely coats, so I would encourage you to try it, as it sounds like your pro plan isn't working.

Re changing your food. You want to do this very gradually. I don't have a set formula, others might, but what I have done is this.......

3 days at 1/4 new food and 3/4 old food
4 days at 1/2 new food and 1/2 old food
4 days at 3/4 new food and 1/4 old food.

You can add to those days if need be.

Re stools....I think you will need to be patient, it may be several weeks. With any new food you try, you do need to give it a good bit of time, I have read anywhere from a month to two months, to see if you get the results you want.

In our case, my problems with Canidae were primarily that his butt scooting came back, even with using pumpkin and oat bran, and that his poops were alot bigger and squishier than on the diamond (the two problems go hand in hand). He loves it, his coat is fine, etc.

For every person you find who loves Canidae, you will find another who hates it. Just like any other food.

Canidae might look good on paper but Thor did horrible on it. He had terrible flaking, his shedding was insane, his coat was thin, and he had big poops. Some dogs might do well on Canidae but it just about ruined Thor. Do a search for Canidae and see what others think about it. I think you'll find that not many dogs do well on it for an extended period of time.

Mine did horrible on this food as well. Hotspots (which we never get), shedding, foot licking and gunk in the ears. I ditched that stuff as soon as I could. It seems you either do well on it or its a disaster.
