I am only 2 days into switching him from ProPlan Puppy to Acana Adult. I am mixing it 50/50 and he has bad gas and the runs.

Will this go away or even after day one is that a sign his body doesn't like it???

On dogfoodanalysis. com it shows Proplan as a 1 star rating and the Acana is a 4 star food with no corn or wheat at all. Does every dog go through this while switching them 2 a new food???

If I recall when you switch foods you have to do it slowly, not 50/50. Use the search bar, there have been posting about how to do it. Good luck.

Just because the Acana has a higher rating doesn't mean it will be the right food for your dog. I would do the switch a tad slower, just to be safe, but your dog may never have nice stools on the new food. That's why there are so many companies out there making dog food...not all dogs do the same on the same food. Pro Plan is actually a pretty decent food and the choice of many top breeders of all breeds of dogs, so if your dog never does well on the Acana, you can put him back on Pro Plan.

It certainly sounds like a problem from transitioning too quickly. Also, a dog can have more gas and the runs when switching from a food with a lot of fillers like the ProPlan (poultry by-product meal, corn gluten, digest, etc.) to a formula with ingredients like Acana Adult (chicken meal, oats, chicken, peas, brown rice, etc.)

My suggestion:
For the next 3-4 days feed 75% old food to 25% new food
The 3-4 days of 50/50
Then 3-4 days of 75% new to 25% old

Add a tablespoon of plain canned pumpkin to each meal.

I definitely think it's worth giving it a slower try.

Foods with peas will give my dog gas. Slow down your transition and see what happens, your dog may adjust. Puppy's can be harder to transition than adult dogs.

We have just gone through the exact same transition. We transitioned over a 1.5 week period and started at a 75-25 mix. Even with this slow transition our girl had deadly gas and terrible smelling poop. The plus side, it only lasted 4 days. Now we are fully transitioned and completely back to normal!

Good luck and I'm sure everything will be fine very soon.

We had to bip off of Acana for a short while to go on Hill's I/D for some acid problems, when we transitioned back we did it really really slowly. Probably over about 2 weeks with little wee increases of new food and decreases of the old. The transition from one type of Acana (puppy - adult) to another, we transitioned with more confidence and did it in only about a week. But yah, like people said, I too would suggest just starting with very minimal amount of Acana.

If the problem continues than you can at least rule out the transition as the issue and the may be something else not sitting right.

Good luck! :D

The gut flora determines how the food will be processed... The Pro Plan was like a paste of processed food with no real food value....now your dog is eating real food... the flora has to readjust.... always when switching go slow to make the flora adjust to the new food... Dry foods don't have any enzymes because they were cooked out ....but the gut with the good bacteria make enzymes to break the food down and allow the nutrients to be absorbed.... The gas is caused by food not being broken down.... I've found any food change can be helped by adding a spoonful of plain low or non fat organic yogurt...Preferably Stonyfield..(lots of good bacteria)

Remember smaller amounts of good food need to be fed...if you are feeding the same amount that too could be an issue...

Good luck and once the food is started to be digested better you should see a different dog...

Thought I'd post again on this thread to share a bit of info I just came across. In an Honest Kitchen (dehydrated dog food) newsletter, it suggests feeding small amounts of fresh parsley to a dog having gas problems. The OP mentions that as a problem (temporary most likely), but thought it might be worth trying during the food transition.

I would switch over a lot slower than you are doing now.
