Hi all! we are considering adopting a lab from an international rescue based in Taiwan. Apparently animals are treated badly there and the country is overrun with dogs. has anyone adopted from Taiwan before and can share their experiences or advice? anyone ever adopted a shelter dog from another country. Sounds crazy but saw this doggie on petfinder.com and fell in love, wish he lived here!!

There are a lot of dogs in dire need of help, rescue, adoption right there in California. Have you looked into a local shelter? It would be a heck of a lot easier.
I have no experience in adopting from Taiwan.

I cant be of too much help but I know to get a us dog out of the country you have to deal with the department of agriculture fill out special health certs and deal with what ever testing requirements the country in question requires.
my best guess would be start there as well as contact the shelter in question and find out what their procedure has been in the past. I know one shelter from taiwan had been featured on tv alot so im sure they have some experience adopting out of the country.
but two barking dogs is correct there are alot of dogs closer to home it would be easier and cheaper to adopt. you can always send the shelter a donation in your special dogs name to help them out i am sure they would appreciate it and you can then help two dogs. with the thousands of dogs available in this country im sure there has to be one that will tug at your heart and transport can be arranged to get them to you.
good luck,
amanda who would love nothing more than for my fosters to tug on someones heart strings...

Sounds fishy to me. I would adopt in the US instead.

I knew I remembered posting on a thread that a member had started with a picture of a Taiwanese foster dog that was coming to their home, beautiful yellow lab. This is the link to the thread below.

I think you have to have a certain number of posts before you can PM someone - posting on the welcome threads is a great way to get them. If you PM Denis you might be able to get some first hand information. Also in the thread there is some contact information on the rescue as well. I imagine it is quite a process. I adopted a GA dog and with transport & health certificates that was a bit challenging but very rewarding and I felt compelled by his photo so I understand how that is.

Please consider adopting a dog here in the US. There are many dogs in need of love and good homes listed in the Rescue section. Transport usually can be arranged ... please do not allow distance to discourage you!

And this is different from the dogs here in the United States.... HOW?
You are asking for heart ache and an empty wallet. Please go to a reputable rescue here in the US. We aren't hard to find and will be there to support you if you need help after the adoption.

I'm volunteering as foster home for Love a Mutt Pet Rescue. www.loveamutt.org. I have had few fosters that came from Taiwain. The organinaztion called TUAPA (Taichung Universal Animal Protection Association) www.lovedog.org.tw.
There is nothing to be concern about adopting dogs from Taiwan. Dogs came to USA with complete vet check and spayed/neuter. Dogs have had temperment tested. You can find all information via TUAPA site and see all pics at http://www.flickr.com/photos/eguchi_onion/sets/.
The adoption fee is same as adopting dog in USA. The rescue organization paid for transportation.

and we have had several dogs from Taiwan! They have all been wonderful dogs with great temperaments, good with other dogs, and clean bills of health.
Yes, we fully understand that there are lots of labs in the US and we grab a lot in California... but we are working with this one group in Taiwan that is fabulous. They all immediately go into foster homes.
The risks are no different than any other group. Rescues come in all personalities :).
My male is from Southern California and has serious separation anxiety. He is a sweet boy though! But he was abused, tied to something, has a scar around his neck, his elbows are a mess, his hips are bad, and never learned any house breaking manners. He follows me around all day (he's my body guard), but spray any kind of bug spray and he's a MESS!!
Good luck, Debbie
