View Full Version : Taste of the Wild
Noel's Mom 04-12-2008, 06:18 PM Sorry. I tried to do a search first, but it pulled up every thread with the word "taste" in it, so I started a thread.
I'm looking for feedback from those that have fed or do feed Taste of the Wild (or if you know anything about the food). While out looking for Purina Pro Plan Selects Salmon and Rice today, it was recommended to me to try the TOTW Salmon blend. The ingredients look really good and it's grain free. It's also free of flaxseed which seems to be a big part of Noel's problem. Price was comparable to what I've been paying for the Purina Pro Plan Selects.
Seems in my area the Petsmarts and Petcos have a hard time getting the Purina Pro Plan Selects. They say it doesn't sell so they're at the mercy of their distributor and managers to order it, so they never know when it's going to come in. Biggest problem is many people in my area don't want to pay the price for the Purina Pro Plan Selects so it sits.
I may give the Taste of the Wild a try, but I wanted to hear from some of you first.
cheyennes mom 04-13-2008, 05:36 AM with all the endless research i have done it's a great quality food their high prairie and the other one ( i believe there are 3 formulas) have a 6 star rating on dog food analysis if that is of any help to you,,,,,,
CanyonLabradors 04-13-2008, 06:48 AM I forget what Noel's problem is, but from what I have heard, those who have tried it like the food alot.
The ingredients look pretty good to me. :)

The ingredients look pretty good to me. :)Noel had yeast infections in her ears when she was about 4 months old and vet suggested to stop feeding her anything with wheat, corn, soy, beef or chicken. She's 17 months old and never had another yeast infection since feeding foods without those ingredients, but always had pudding poops.
She did really good with firm poops, no itching and less shedding on the Purina Pro Plan Selects that didn't contain flaxseed. Since ToTW is the only premium brand I can find without flaxseed I'm going to give it a try and see if flaxseed might be the culprit.
I think the ingredients looked good too. I did a search of Taste of the Wild reviews and all the reviews were good from the people that tried it or used it. The few bad reviews were from people that wouldn't use it because it's a Diamond product.
cheyennes mom 04-13-2008, 07:51 AM Good Luck I hope she likes it!!!
zoezoe 04-13-2008, 11:04 AM Have you tried feeding foods with at least 4% fiber and higher? Zoe used to get pudding poos on anything less.
I tried the TOTW Fish with Dutch. He did fine on it and really liked it. Didn't make a difference in what I was looking for, so I switched him back to the Kirkland C&R with the others.
I know a lot of people who feed it and LOVE what it does for their dogs. I've used some samples as training treats and the dogs adore the taste, so when I get ready to switch foods again, I'm really looking at TOTW.
Noel's Mom 04-13-2008, 07:04 PM Thanks for all the feedback. I started the gradual switch this morning since I had some Pro Plan Select left. I'll let you all know how they do on the ToTW. They like the taste that's for sure. I really wanted to keep them on the Pro Plan Selects Salmon and Rice, but if it's going to be a nightmare to purchase other than having it shipped to me I might as well find something they do well on that I can get easily.
FG167 04-14-2008, 06:40 AM We are in the process of switching our dogs over to ToTW. It was recommended to me on the Pit Bull Forum I frequent for Kya. Supposed to be the top food over there. I also liked that it rated high on the Dog Food Analysis site and the ingredients sounded good. Another plus was the three separate meat sources - Fish, Fowl, Red Meat. I'm switching Kya/Midas over to the Fowl food and Mason onto the Fish (he has wretched dry, brittle hair that is shedding all the time). The Fowl switch was really fast (we were almost out of our old food) and neither Kya or Midas had a problem. Mason vomited the first night after I started a GRADUAL switch to the fish (a new protein source he hasn't ever had). Also, the Fish formula smells fishy and it gives Mason smelly fishy breath but after that first time he's been fine on it. Everyone's poops are firming up nicely too :) Ideally, I would like to always have two bags and rotate the different sources in and out. Hopefully once they get used to this new brand. I have to say that this has been the fastest/easiest food switch with Midas, he usually gets horrible diarrhea when switching so I'm happy there. I look forward to hearing how your dogs do on it as well :) I've also heard really good things about Wellness Core and they have three different flavors as well. I think they may be relatively new though.
HBDunn 04-14-2008, 07:01 AM I remember before I bought my boys I went to the pet food store and that was the first food I was drawn to..their packaging is awesome! After that I did some online research and have read really great things about them.
kpowell 04-14-2008, 08:07 AM I'm starting Jack on it right now because my store was out of Wellness Core. I know it has fewer calories than the Core, so I'll have to feed more of it. I think TOTW has 350 per cup and Core has about 425.
Slow Hand Luke 04-14-2008, 09:52 AM I switched over to TOTW Pacfic Steam for Luke he is almost through his first sack.He is doing good on it no itching issues. The only thing I feed Luke half of what they reconmend for his weight also he gets a little wellness 95% meat canned as a topper on breakfast only.
RLC12345678 05-02-2008, 09:05 PM I'm about to start my yorkies on the Fish formula! No store carries in my town so I'm going to have to order it. Ugh! How's Noel doing on it?
Tricia's petz 05-02-2008, 09:14 PM We're getting the Timberwolf line where I work.. Should be coming in on monday- I'll let y'all know what feedback we get on it!!! :)
Noel's Mom 05-02-2008, 09:45 PM I'm about to start my yorkies on the Fish formula! No store carries in my town so I'm going to have to order it. Ugh! How's Noel doing on it?The fish is the one I feed. I think it's Pacific Stream. Noel's doing great. We've been thru a 15# bag and about half way thru the 30# bag and all 3 are doing great. Great coats, great looking ears, firm poops and nobody is scratching or chewing.
We've also started doing the gradual switch with my chihuahua that's been on Prescription Hills Science Diet Z/D for about 4 months. She hasn't had any bouts of diarreah or stretching from stomach pain like she did with anything we fed her before the RX food.
So far so good. It will be so nice to have found a food that Noel thrives on and all 4 can eat.
