well, i have begun trying to teach homer to eat raw meaty bones properly.

maxine, my rottweiler, eats her bones very carefully. really, it takes her about twenty minutes to eat a couple of chicken wings, she chews and savors every mouthful. i am not worried about her choking at all.

homer inhales his food. i have posted about this before asking advice and i have read other's posts about the same. most advice that i got was about how to get him to slow down eating his kibble. we have gotten him to slow down a bit.... it is really a work in progress though. i have been introducing some meals of raw bone to him gradually, and so far i have done this by hand feeding him... having him knaw bits off of a chicken back that i am holding in my hand. he seems to be getting the message, but slowly. he has trouble calming down, cute little guy, especially when he has something extra good to eat. i thought of trying him on a frozen solid chicken back, so he will be forced to chew it. is it a bad idea to feed still frozen meat to a dog? i wonder if it will affect his digestion to eat cold icy food. i do give him marrow bones still frozen and he is fine with that.

so, anyone have any advice for me about trying some frozen meaty bones? should i just keep on hand feeding him until he gets it? i know someone must have some experience with this :) :) cause one thing i have learned is that LABS LOVE TO EAT.

thanks in advance!

Holding the piece of RMB is what I've heard most people say to do. Remember dogs don't actually chew and grind before they swallow they just sort of crunch it a few times and then swallow. We have always ground our chicken mainly because we can pack the large quantity in the freezer but when they have actually had the pieces they have done well. Boomer is like that he eats it FAST.
