I am desperately trying to figure out what to switch my two to...they are currently on Nutro NC Lamb & Rice, and are doing well, but this recall concerns me.

I've researched Nature's Logic, California Naturals and Canidae...all could be good. I just read that the closest you can get to 30% protein and 18% fat content and includes Omega Fatty Acids, then that's a good food. I don't know how true that is, or how my dogs would react to such a change. All have Lamb & Rice formulas, which is what I need to stick to, since I 'think' Muddy is allergic to chicken.

Nature's Logic has 30% protein and 18% fat...while the other two have 21% and 11%, respectively.

Any thoughts?

Eagle Pack Holistic Senior has 26% protein and 10% fat but includes chicken meal. Their Lamb & Rice is 22/15 and the Anchovy Sardine & Salmon is 22/12 and is recommended for dogs with allergies. Check out their web site, it lists all of the ingredients. I switched all three of mine to EP a month ago when this whole fiasco started.

If Muddy is sensitive to chicken, then perhaps you should take out the Nature's Logic L&R, as it contains chicken liver. Cal Natural L& R and Canidae L&R do not appear to contain any chicken ingredients.

I think either choice would be a good one.

Thank you. I just priced them out...I'd need a second job just to pay for the Nature's Logic.

Wow, prices must differ dramatically all over the country!

I did buy my Nature's Logic in bulk (15 bags), so ended up paying only $31. If I remember correctly, a similar sized bag of Cal Natural was close to $40. Its also cheaper than what I was paying for Natural Balance Potato & Duck.

But that's just as well, because I thought the other two were better choices for you, considering the chicken thing.

It was $44.99 for only a 26lb. bag. The others are around $40 for 36lb/40lb bag. Feeding amounts aren't different enough to make up for the smaller bag.

But, like you said, better off with the cheaper ones anyway...

You mention wanting a higher protein. How old are your dogs?

While California Natural is an excellent dog food I don't feel 21% protein is enough for a growing puppy, nor is it enough for a less active senior dog that needs to maintain muscle mass (protein builds muscle).

I feed Natural Blend by Royal Canine/Sensible Choice (not recalled - no gluten whatsoever) and love it. But, they don't make a lamb based formula - only chicken. I wish they would expand their line of food as so many dogs have allergy issues.

Doesn't Kirkland make a lamb and rice formula (Cosco) and it is very reasonably priced. Don't know if there is a Cosco near you.

Do you have a Costco anywhere near you? Kirkland L&R is a good food $18.00 for 40lbs.Luke did well on it when I had him on it.

Already tried the Kirkland...they got itchy/dry skin/dull coat. Thanks though!!

I think all of the Kirkland foods contain barley :(

And that could be attributed to their itching/dull coat, ya think?

Barley is a close relative to wheat, and wheat is poorly tolerated by a great many dogs (its one of the prime allergens), so it definitely could be a culprit.

Grip can't handle anything in the wheat family (wheat, rye, barley).
