View Full Version : Tied With A 3 Foot Chain
justloafing 03-02-2004, 11:24 AM I ran accross this on the Web today. I will find out more later today about the dog. I do know the Dog is a big frienly mutt. Age,sex I hope to find out later today. Also the dog is located inbetween Asheville and Hickory, North Carolina. The lady runs a rescue that I talked to but wants to remain somewhat quiet about herself. She knew nothing about the dog but a person who lives near the dog contacted her. If you might know of anyone that would be intrested please send me a PM. Here is the note I found on the Web about the dog.

Oh, that poor dog! :( I hope you can find out more details about what type, size, and age of this boy, Matt. If he's friendly with kids, other dogs, cats, etc. He's out of there with the rescue lady now or not? I feel so bad when I hear things like this ... keep us posted!
justloafing 03-02-2004, 11:50 AM No this pup is still tied up on that chain. From what I understand the SPCA has been out there and the owner of the dog really throws a fit when they come around to look at the dog, crys racism and all. The rescue lady said that she is afraid of retrobution from the owner that is why she wants to keep quiet. I will ask her about the temperment about the dog. The neighbor says the dog is just as friendly as can be. The only and only reason I can think the dog has not been taken by the SPCA is: the dog is fed. From what I understand if someone will take the dog they will go get it. Get this, the owner has a paddlelock attached to the pups collar and chain.
Wow -- that's just so sad. Keep us posted if you hear more!
justloafing 03-03-2004, 07:32 PM As of tonight. I may have found a rescue that may take the pup. Sort of up in the air but it does sound promising,
As far as the person that is trying to get this pup out of the hell the pup is in. The neighbor of the dog did not call her back. She assured me she was not giving up.
I really think if this whole story is on the up'n up(I am 99% sure it is). If the shelter will take this pup and the SPCA will go get the pup we (pup lovers) stand a good chance of this pup getting closer to his/her final home.
Keep your fingers crossed. A prayer wont hurt either. It is still up in the air as I said above.
justloafing 03-03-2004, 08:06 PM Wahoooooo. The lady that brought this pups attention to me said and this is quoted"This is going to happen" I guess she is getting the dog and is going to have it neutered and checked for heartworm for $80.00. She says she has a vet that is going to help.
Now I have to live up to my end of the bargin. And I will:D
Claire 03-04-2004, 05:06 AM WTG Matt! :D

OMG, Matt!!! I've got happy tears, here!! :tissue: You were wanting to be involved with the Shadow transport so badly and now I wish I could be involved in rescuing this poor pup. Please keep us posted!!!
Labradornut 03-04-2004, 07:42 AM Please keep us posted. Since I live fairly close to Hickory, I want to help if I can!
justloafing 03-04-2004, 07:57 AM This story continues. As of now the neighbor has not called her back. He was supposed to call 2 days ago. She does not have the address but has a clue of the area of where the dog is. If she does not hear from the neighbor she is going to try and find the dog and get the SPCA to get the dog. She said she does not have the room to foster the dog. So I have been keeping up with the Shelter here so as to find either a home or a fostering situation for the pup.
Keep your fingers and toes crossed.
HarleyMoose, keep your eyes open to this post and your PM. I may need a hand on this. Thank you
CDuncan 03-04-2004, 08:03 AM Thanks for keeping us all posted, and for working so hard to help find this pup a real forever home. My fingers are crossed that you can get this dog out of this situation as soon as possible.
I'm going to meet up with a girl from a shelter down east tonight to pick up a 4-mo chow mix pup that has also been tied out to a tree most of her short life. She somehow convinced the people to give her up (yay for her). I'll post pictures of "Rosie" tonight once I get her home.
Gunnergirl 03-04-2004, 08:09 AM I hope the neighbor hasn't decided that he doesn't want to get involved! :(
Sending good vibes and prayers that way! I hope someone can get this pup out of there!!!! Hey Matt, once the pup is out, howabout arranging to tie the owner up to the chain and MAYBE feeding him on occassion if he's lucky???

If I can work that out Tammy. Would you like to kick him a few times as I bring the food?
About the neighbor not calling her back. I sort of have the same thought. The positive is. This lady said she is on a mission and will get this dog.
CDuncan, Great story.

:(
I am leaving tomorrow and will be gone for a week, but I will check this thread and pms while gone just in case you need me when I get back. I do want to help if I can.
justloafing 03-04-2004, 08:45 AM Thanks HM:D
justloafing 03-04-2004, 04:34 PM Good news on my end today. The Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue (SOAR) gave me the go ahead to bring that pup in. The owner called me from Fla. She owns 4 rescues on the East coast. She was shocked by the email that I sent SOAR and assured that they will take care of the dog and find him the best home to go live in forever.
I am still waiting to hear what is going on at the other end. I hope and pray she found the pup one way or another.
Keeping fingers and toes crossed for that poor pup!!
justloafing 03-04-2004, 08:32 PM Well, This is good and bad. She did find the pup. The description of the living conditions for the pup I am not going to decsribe on this board. It is not a house but a buisness and everyone seems to be afraid of this guy. Right now I am sort of in a holding pattern. Let me put it to you all this way. Everyone involved with this is doing and thinking of ways to get this pup in a legal way. I will post more on this later.
GeorgiaCotton 03-04-2004, 09:39 PM This furbaby is definitely in my prayers. Things like this just break my heart, and make me mad as he!!. What kind of laws do NC have on animal cruelty? I hope that the owners gets what is coming to him! :hammer: :hammer: :hammer: Please keep us posted on this one.

I hear that GC.
Today I maybe going to our shelter here and find out. I am also wondering if anyone has really been called about this pup. The lady I am dealing with has not called the SPCA. This is what she was told by the neighbor. Yesterday was the first day she saw the dog. She is taking pictures today and sending them to me. More than likley I will not post them on this board. I will update as I learn things.
CDuncan 03-05-2004, 07:45 AM I tried to find a link... I know mixedupdog has posted it before... of animal cruelty laws in the different states. From what I remember of it, North Carolina's laws are very basic... If there is some shelter and some food and no physical abuse, Animal Control is hard pressed to take a dog away. The chow puppy I was going to pick up last night was also tied out. Animal Control had convinced the people to give her up, but when they went to get the dog last night they had changed their minds about keeping her. :(
It breaks my heart to think about all the dogs, in this state especially, that are tied outside or kept in a pen and never have any human interaction...
Good luck with this pup, Matt. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed.
justloafing 03-05-2004, 09:17 AM I did find this. One of the problems here. The people are afraid of this guy so they may not come foward.

Claire 03-05-2004, 01:35 PM Matt good luck with everything! I just started reading this thread - but by what I see - I think the owner (if you want to call him that) of the dog needs a good yankee *** kickin' ;) Makes my blood boil
SMITTY 03-05-2004, 01:54 PM Is there any way to video tape the owner: abusive talk, kicking etc. Get it on video!!! Oh Matt, how to spend your birthday.
Don't laugh, but I'm going to the Chapel down the hall and say a prayer for this Lab.
We Yanks are thinking of you and wish we could send back up - all we can send is our prayer!
Thanks Matt for all you are doing for this LAB!

justloafing 03-06-2004, 02:45 PM I went down to Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue (SOAR) today. A great place with people that just love the animals a lot. The pups were clean and their pens where also very clean. They know what their doing.
The owner was there and I got to talk at some length with her. She is a great lady with some clout around the state. I think she may take this whole thing over from the lady in Hickory. Ohh about our Animal Control (SPCA). This lady says they are about as useful as teets on a bull in some cases.
GeorgiaCotton 03-09-2004, 01:38 PM Any updates on the situation? I pray for this poor dog every night!
justloafing 03-09-2004, 02:41 PM Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers going to this pup. The person that I have been in contact with has not been able to get any pictures yet:( . She went Sunday morning and got there around 6:30 to get the pictures and there was someone out in the back where the dog is so she could not get pictures. I am putting a lot of trust in her because she used to rescue in Delaware. I think she knows what she is doing.
Also like I said in a earlier post. This guy that owns the dog is a mean one. So she is being very cautious. Also the rescue shelter where this dog is going to go when rescued said this was not going to be quick. Right now I feel sort of stuck between a rock and a hard place. If I don't get pictures in a day or so I am going to try and push this harder. Just keep those prayers and good thoughts comming. I will update as soon as I hear anything. Count on it:) .
Gunnergirl 03-10-2004, 09:46 AM I was hoping for good news when checking in this morning! :/
Still sending thoughts, prayers and hopes of help on the way to this poor dog!! (and bad thoughts to his 'owner')
justloafing 03-10-2004, 03:13 PM Here is the letter I wrote to SOAR and to the person that is helping me trying to get this pup free. It does not sound real promising. I am deleting the name of the buisness because I know all of you all would call.:D
I called the ********* ******* Humane Society today. She is going to go to ****** ************ probably tommorrow and see if she can get this dog. She was very nice. She has no authority (police) to just go pick up the dog. So she is going in with a story and try to pick him up for free. I told her I would give her money if she had to pay. She said this approach is not very succesful but was going to give it a shot. I will let you know with in a day or two. You will be the first to know after me.
Matt
justloafing 03-12-2004, 07:08 PM I did contact the Humane Soceity where this pup is. They called me early this evening. Here is the scoop.
The dog is ok Actually I found out there are two dogs ( I did not know). They are on 10 ft chains:mad: . According to the HS there was about 10 poops around the dog I was trying to get out. They appear to be well fed and watered also their coats seem to be in fair condition. The owner has the water set up so it can not be knocked over. One problem. The big dog can't fit under the car for shelter. The person I spoke to called Animal Control. Animal Control is going out to the buisness to make sure a shelter is set up for both dogs.
As the person I spoke to said "this would not be acceptable for my standards, it really is not that bad". As for us on this board, way below standards.
I have not heard from the person I have talked to from the first of this who was going to take the pictures (I will call.). So I sort of have to go from the Humane Soceity says for now. So for now this story is sort of fading away. I am going to stay in contact with the person who peaked my intrest in this and try to keep on top of this.
I can't thank you all enough for the wishes and the prayers. I am going to stay on top of this as long as I have a contact there. Also I do have a great intrest to take a day or two to go see what is going on for myself.
Labradornut 03-14-2004, 08:44 AM I am back home now. Can you tell me what city this dog is in?
Maybe I could go take a look myself if it's not too far away.
Gunnergirl 03-14-2004, 09:38 AM I wonder if attempting to educate the owner would help...maybe if someone built a couple of dog houses and donated them to the dogs w/ some straw/hay to go inside or something?? Definitely below 'our' standards, but I'm sure we have all seen worse. If we could just help provide the dogs w/ shelter from the elements??? Maybe 'dump' 2 used dog houses off at night??
Labradornut 03-14-2004, 10:56 AM Great Idea! I have 1 dog house that I would give the owner.
justloafing 03-14-2004, 11:43 AM That's not a bad idea, Tammy.
HarleyMoose, I will PM you and send you the name of the Company and the street address. If you could see the dogs that would help ease or distress my mind more.
jackyscott 03-15-2004, 11:25 AM Still hoping the best for these two. THe dog houes is a good idea. Keep us updated!
justloafing 03-15-2004, 11:28 AM We will know more tomorrow. Thanks to someone on this board.:)
Labradornut 03-15-2004, 04:19 PM That would be me. My Mom and I are going to check the dogs out tomorrow and see what we can see and take pictures if possible.
Everyone keep us in your prayers since this man that has the dogs doesn't seem to be very nice.
justloafing 03-15-2004, 07:13 PM You go girls:D
Labradornut 03-15-2004, 09:19 PM I am going to have to wait until Thursday to go to look for the dogs. It is going to be raining all day Tuesday and I am busy Wednesday. Thursday, the weather should be nicer. Will keep you posted.
TanDunc 03-15-2004, 09:59 PM Way to go, justloafing! (See, I was right about that warm fuzzy thing!;) LOL!) Sending good thoughts and prayers that way.
Be careful, Harleymoose! I'll be thinking about you on Thursday!
I've been busy, but I'm still watching this thread with interest. Be careful, Becky -- you'll be in my prayers Thursday!
justloafing 03-18-2004, 05:38 AM If you are going today HarleyMoose. Good luck and be safe. Send an email to me when you get back.
Labradornut 03-18-2004, 06:46 AM Yes, I am going today. We are leaving around lunchtime here - takes about an hour to get there.
I am stopping on the way home to see Harley's parents which I have never seen (My son was the one that bought him). I am real excitied about that!
Anyway, I should be home around 4-4:30. I will post what I find out about the dogs tied up.
Labradornut 03-18-2004, 04:44 PM We're back!
I was not able to get any pictures though.
We first drove up the street beside the place. The fenced in area has a big gate on the side to pull the cars in. We could see one black dog laying down beside a DOG HOUSE!!!!!
I couldn't tell if he was chained or not, but he looked in good health. There were lot of guys in the back working.
We drove behind the place and parked in a parking lot for some apartments. That's where I thought I might get some pictures, but the chain link fence has these board slats running through the mesh, so we couldn't see if there was another dog.
I then drove to the other side by the tire place. The fence on that side had wood through it too, so I couldn't see again.
I can only assume that since one of the dogs has a house, so does the other one, especially since the humane society talked to them about shelter. And the fenced area was not that big, so I can't imagine those guys leaving dog poop on the ground for very long. They wouldn't be able to stand the smell. We then decided to leave because we saw that one of the guys was watching us.
Even though I wouldn't keep a dog that way, the dog I saw looked good and maybe got a little petting during the work day since there were several guys working there. Hope so anyway.
justloafing 03-18-2004, 06:30 PM Great job and a great report. It sounds like the person that contacted me was over stating some facts. It makes me feel a little better. Actually a lot better. I know that a dog in NC and all it needs to have is a rabies shot every 4 years, food.water and shelter. It sounds like the pups are ok according to the law. I bet they don't get regular check ups from a vet or have never seen a heartworm pill. Who knows? I may have been lied to from the start of this. I think because of some pressure and not because of me. Maybe these pups are better off than what I first reported. I have had the Humane Society go out there and a very very nice person ( HarleyMoose ) wanted to see for herself what shape these dogs were in. I am taking the latter two stories for the truth. This is not what any of us would put our pups through but it aint nearly as bad as what was reported.
I want to thank you all for the positive post about these pup's. Also HarleyMoose, if there is anything I can do for you. Let me know and I mean that. You and your mom are
TanDunc 03-18-2004, 06:43 PM Way to go, HarleyMoose and justloafing! I think in many ways you have already helped those dogs!
