View Full Version : Transitioning foods and amount questions?
Tide's Mom 03-25-2009, 09:51 AM I'm going to start giving Tide the Evo Reduced Fat added into her CN Lamb and Rice being Miss Fatty isn't losing weight. I'm currently giving her 3/4's of a cup in the morning and then again at night, for a total of 1 1/2 cups a day. I'll also add green beans and/or broccoli as a filler. My question is, what should I break up the Evo and CN into? 1/4 CN and 1/2 Evo, or vice-versa? What about the green beans, do I still add them? I'm also looking into maybe switching to the CN L&R Reduced Calorie when the normal CN is done. Do I need to mix them like I would if changing to a totally different food?
Sorry for the dumb questions, just want to make sure I'm doing this right.;)
uplander 03-25-2009, 11:32 AM I will not make any guarantees that EVO will change the weight... but for Satchel it has given a lot of muscle (which weighs more than fat)..
The transition should always be done slow if you want greater chance of maintaining firm stool.. I would stop the green beans.. that is just filler..
Maybe feed a total of two cups a day.. 9/10ths Cal Nat 1/10 cup Evo RF.
Build up to the 20 %.. the second week. Tide may be a great candidate to increase the EVO RF to a total diet if she tolerates the food change..Each week adding more... It could really help her leg heal and get the muscles strong in the hind legs..
My last Lab , Jazz a spayed female, maintained an 80 lb weight on only 2 cups of Food per day.. (and a few treats)

Yeah, that's the problem. She should be around 70lbs and feeding her 2 cups a day of the CN was WAY to much. even the 1 1/2 cups isn't working. UGH!
Yes, transitioning slow is definitely the way to go but do I have to do it with the CN LC if she's already on the regular formula? Should I just stick to the EVO RF for now and see how she does? Perhaps making a complete switch to EVO RF? God, this stuff has me SOO confused!

When you say she should be around 70 lbs.. That could be the issue.. Rather then going by scales.. the way Tide looks and feels is a better indicator of health.. The EVO RF should improve tone... and the improving weather more exercise and days outside..
If I was really looking for weight loss , without the problems of using two foods... Try a regular slow switch to EVO RF...It's like an Atkins diet. If Tide tolerates all the extras in the EVO RF.. Grain frees should keep the weight in better proportion... Rice in the CaL Nat makes it almost a 50 % Carb food.. ..EVO RF is only 9 % Carb.
The only way is trial and error... unfortunately.. Labs love to eat.. yet they don't need much to maintain weight.
3lablady 03-25-2009, 12:42 PM I've just started adding some reduced fat EVO to my guy's Calif. natural Lamb and Rice. Will have to wait and see how things go.

I agree, the look and feel test is the way to go but she definitely needs to be AROUND 70lbs. Even my vet said to have her drop about 10lbs and see how she feels and looks. It's just something to base her weight loss on. Trust me, I don't have in my mind that she HAS to weigh 70lbs. ;)

Are you also dong it for weight loss?

I'm doing it mainly for a little more protein. But actually Gunner and Daisy could loose a few pounds. With our crazy Winter we've had they've been pretty much big couch potatoes! LOL

OK, well let me know how you make out. I'll be buying some this weekend.

I will. I just started adding it yesterday. I love Calif. Natural but I think the protein is just a bit low. I also had added some TOTW Canine Wetlands before because the protein is higher and it's grain free.
Tide's Mom 03-25-2009, 01:28 PM OK, now I'm even more confused. They have about the same amount of calories.
EVO RF
440 kcal/cup (4.29 oz = 1cup)
CN Lamb and Rice (what Tide is on now)
430 kcal/cup (3.8 oz = 1 cup)
I have a headache!:o:
ImWithThePyr 03-25-2009, 01:56 PM Actually... Evo RF has less calories because a cup of it weighs more than a cup of CN Natural... so if you were going by calories, you'd feed less Evo RF to get the same amount of calories as CN Lamb and Rice. Does that make sense?

Are you speaking english??? :brow: Kidding, yes, that makes sense (I think). Thank you ;)

is that true?
The calories listed are per cup.....not weight.
You would feed less per weight....not per cup.
LadyBuckeye 03-25-2009, 05:51 PM I've had good luck with Ava, will be 3 in May, loosing some pounds... she is suppose to be about 68-70#. She gets 3/4 cup total kibble....CN L&R and of it 1/8 cup (or a cough syrup cup) is EVO Reduced Fat. I add a tablespoon or so of canned California Natural L&R. I have stopped giving daily kongs (mostly because DH was laid off and home) but realize that the 2% velveeta cheese slice I was putting in it with the canned dog food was not helping matters! I've also been breaking the CN Biscuits into smaller pieces. When DH gets back to work, I'm going to have to reduce the morning feeding to be able to give the stuffed kongs again.
I'm also optimistic that as the weather warms Ava (and Molly) will get more exercise. Ava's been in the pool nearly every day this week...but, she only is good for a quick dip to cool off...no water retrieving for her. She just likes to steel whatever Molly retrieves and play keep away :)
Amanda, sorry for the repeat - I forgot I responded last night to your other thread.
