I posted this on the nutrition forum and realized I should have put it here. Sorry if you are seeing this twice.

While at the vets yesterday, she mentioned that I could make treats from canned dog food. Piper is just staarting on Natural Balance potato and duck food today. They also make a treat with potato and duck, but I would like to have something smaller; the treats crumble like a cracker when broken.

What I failed to do is finf out how long to cook this and at what temperature. She said to make small balls with the food, but what next? Will I need to keep these in the refrigerator? How long will they keep?

I don't have a clue, but now you have me curious.

I have heard from other people to spread the canned food out thin into a jellyroll pan or cookie sheet. Bake in a low oven (maybe about 200-250 degrees) for an hour or two (maybe more) until the food is dry by pliable. You then use a pizza cutter to make the size pieces you want.

I still don't know if they need to be refrigerated or how long they will stay fresh is left in a closed container. I have heard that your kitchen will smell while this is cooking. I have friends that make liver treats and they have said that their house reeks for days!! Oh, what we do for out four legged friends!

I make treats with sardines and they smell while they are cooking but that's it. I've never made liver treats.

I would think you'd want to keep them in tupperware in the refrigerator...
