These two girls are so sweet looking. Their story is so sad and I'm hoping someone will be able to help them. I'm pretty sure they aren't in danger of being put down but they have been together since they were 7 weeks old in a home and were just thrown in the shelter recently due to the parents having twins. It has to be a shock for these girls. Maybe someone can help.

Bridgette & Maggie

Labrador Retriever Mix

Size: Large
Age: Adult
Sex: Female
I.D: LS

Notes: Meet Bridgette (yellow Lab) and Maggie (black Lab). They are sweet & loving Lab mixes who are about 9 years old and have been living together since they were only 7 weeks old. They love each other very much & would really like to be placed together. They had been very loyal companions when human twins joined the family & they became jealous. This is why these girls are looking for a new home. They are leash trained & housebroken. Maggie even goes to the door & barks when she has to go outside. They are good with children (despite the twins) but would prefer not to live with them. They both love chew toys & rawhide bones. They also both enjoy being groomed. These are truly wonderful girls who deserve a chance in a new home with the right person. Do you have the heart & the home to take in these two special girls?

As HAHS now has several adoption locations, please contact Liz at 913.707.2114 or diamondgal845@hotmail.com to find out when and where you can meet BRIDGETTE & MAGGIE!"

This is incredibly sad; I'm glad they are safe, but placing one senior is tough; now it's two together. People, I swear ...

Thank you for posting them Dana.

I know Alex and when I look at their faces. ... Look at the grey on Maggie (she's the black lab); reminds me of Abbey. :tissue:

I sometimes think what we need is a quality retirement HOME for labs; not a shelter with runs, but a home that takes in a certain number of seniors and no more than that, so it keeps the home feeling; you take in more has vacancies occur (I know that's not the best way to say that). Besides the money to buy or build such a home, one would need a constant positive cash flow for staff, upkeep of the facility, care for the seniors and so on.

But with this idea, I see an issue harder than money. I think of all the seniors that show up on this board needing homes. What we see is a drop in the bucket. Then I think, there would never be a senior retirement home even remotely big enough to make even a dent. I know "if you save one, you make a difference for that one." I absolutely agree with that philosophy. But, if the retirement home were created to help homeless seniors, then not making a dent starts mattering (to me). Still, I can wish about it.

:(

I could not agree more Susan - "if you build it they will come!" The problem would be they would just keep coming. Sigh - If you ever want to do it tho - Im in!

Poor sweet babies - Just breaks my heart!

OMG, my heart's breaking for them. I love seniors. I have 5 of them. This makes me so angry and sad at the same time. I've thought about just that very thing, Susan and Kathy. We do need a retirement home for labs to live out their remaining years in peace. To be loved and cared for for the rest of their lives and not have to worry about anything I can't stand it. How can someone just throw them out like a piece of garbage. :cry2:

I'll start a new thread. I don't want hijack this, although our conversation does keep them bumped.

Thanks for bumping! :) I know it is hard to place two seniors but there is always a chance, right? Maybe the right person will see them and give them a chance to live out their last years in happiness.
Oh, how I wish I had money lying around.....

Awww....They are sweethearts. They must really love one another. Look how close they want to be to each other. I couldn't do what these people did! You would think that these people could have smoothed things out. All dogs get a little jealous at one time or another. They just need the attention to show they are loved!

While looking at this thread about these poor seniors, I had thoughts of a poem I came across a while back. I think it is appropriate for all senior dogs whether they be in a foster or shelter. I'd like to share it. I apologize for the length, but it makes one think! Here it is:

I'm waiting here in foster care for you to come and see
The one the others have passed by - Please stop and look at me!
I'm not alone here in my quest to find myself a place
Where someone will have love for me and softly stroke my face.
We're not so young in years they say, although we're young at heart
If you'll take a chance with us - please know we'll do our part.
Our faces have a bit of white, our legs a slower gait
Our hearts so full of love to give - but still we sit and wait.
A younger dog is what folks want, one who romps and plays
They won't take time to look at us - just think we're old and gray.
Little do they know the things we have to offer them
Manners learned and quiet souls - good dogs all we've been.
There are those here too whose souls were damaged and in pain
Before they came to this safe place and learned to trust again.
When new folks come and look at them, they seem withdrawn and shy.
Time is all they need to learn that new bonds they can tie.
Patience, love and gentle hands is all they ask of you
In exchange - their hearts they give you in their lives so new.
We may not be the perfect dogs in everybody's eye -
Too big, too small, too brown, too blue, too black, too old, too shy.
But, unless you sit and take the time and see all that we can be
You'll miss the best that is right here - Please stop - HEY - Look at ME!

I hope these two will be noticed along with the other seniors on this board!

The text says that they would prefer not to live with children but I wonder if they'd be ok with my 6 and 8 year old boys... and my cat! Either way I will surely check on them.

Katherine, I am glad you are checking into them despite that. Allergies and kids are common excuses. It will be interesting to hear what your impressions are. Again, thank you for considering them!
