View Full Version : TX Lab Fest - March 11th

Shantis Mom

Ok all you Texans and wanna be Texans - I have been talking to Sarah(Sesser) for a couple of weeks now. She is lucky enough to have access to a labby paradise - acres of land - a cabin with running water and bathroom facilities 2 or 3 ponds - it is between Navasota and Chappell Hill on HWY 1155 (near Washington on the Brazos State Park. She has generoulsly offered up her place for a TX Lab Fest if we can get some folks interested! :)

We wanted to do this early in the Spring here In Tx before the heat sets in so we were looking at March - She is becoming a grandma in March (Congrats by the way) :cheers2: so we were thinking one of the first two weekends that month. We Texans know that March weather can be gorgeous some years but sometimes still rainy and cool. I prefer cool for Lab Fests over oppressive humidity but that is my opinion. So we need some opinions here before we start planning. Would any of my lab loving TX friends or my world traveling friends be interested??

If we get enough interest I will start looking around for dog friendly hotels/campgrounds etc.

SO HOW BOUT IT TX?

Ooooh! Sounds fabulous! Where in TX is this? Sorry, I either missed that or you didn't say. :cone: I am VERY interested in coming, since I missed the Dallas one and I promised Dhana and Allison I'd be there next time.

Katie it is near Navasota - Which is NW of Houston - South of Bryan College Station - Texas A&M about an hour and a half from me - prolly a couple/three from Dallas

If you find a map that happens to have Washington on the Brazos State Park on it you are almost there. The property is about 1/4 mile from the Park. It is close to Brenham (about 20 minutes). I'll be happy to post a map closer to the time! Should be a big time.

That would be great! I have good friends in Bryan/College station.

I'm in! March is a good time of year for this part of TX. The area is about an hour from northwest Houston and about 90 minutes from Austin. Kathy and Sarah, though I may not be able to help much until January I am more than happy to do what I can.

Count us in Kathy! If there are any cabins in the area that allow dogs, that would be ideal for us, otherwise a hotel/motel room will work. Set the date so I can have hubby put in for vacation time!

Ok, just looked at the trusty ole calendar and Mardi Gras is Feb. 28th which means it will be impossible for Bobby to take that next weekend off. If it's the second weekend it should not be a problem.

If I could find a cheap flight from Washington State to Bryan, I would consider it. I just looked and couldn't find anything less than $480.00. When you have decided on a date, I'll look again.

My brother lives in Bryan so it would be a good excuse to visit him. :)

YAY! Ok so I am thinking we make it official and go with the 2nd Saturday in March? I don't have a 2006 calandar - can somebody throw out the date and then Lisa can put it in the title. I figure we won't get much planning done till after the Holidays - Sarah and I will talk and see what kind of accomodations we can come up with for the out of towners!

Oh and Becky - WHOOO HOOOOO Road Trip!

Better late than never. I can try to come if I have a vehicle that is safe to drive that far. I can be in Houston in 18 hours from here.

I assume since it is Texas there is some kind of BBQ facility there? I might be able to bring a boar to grill and will certainly bring some of my salsa. I will know closer to that time if I can make it for sure, but i truely hope to come.

My goodness, I leave work and this thread takes on a life of its own! I am so excited that there are so many interested folks. I don't know about others but I'll definitely need name tags being such a newbie! Thirty acres of the property are my husband's and mine and 50 acres (no fence in between) belong to our cousin who also has two labs a chocolate and a black. My only concern about camping is that there are cows and there are four wild mustangs that are out and about. We have a "barndominium" that is just about completed - barn on the bottom living space on the top. There is only one bedroom and a living room but at least some folks could sleep on floors, etc. there. We are definitely planning on putting in a fire pit so a campfire would be a great idea. As Kathy said, she and I'll get together after the holidays and start planning this thing. As far as I am concerned though, can't go wrong with margaritas - everything else is just icing on the cake!

I know I already posted this in another thread.. but due to a very good month at work.. we might be able to swing it! :) I have to see how much my check is.. and of course figure out how much airfare/hotel is.. then I'll know for sure. Of course, like all of our other trips, it will be a weekend whirl - Late Thursday night-Sunday evening.. but short is better than nothing! :)

Lisa, if you all aren't allergic to Southwest Airlines you can fly n/s to either Houston Hobby or Austin. I have seen dirt cheap fares, especially on their weekly post and on their downloadable DING! application, but you have to move fast to get the DING! fares. I can keep an eye out if you like.

Or fly Continental to Houston Intercontinental, that's the closest airport.

Let's us Texans do this up right!

MISS LISA
12-01-2005, 10:13 AM
Aww! Thanks Andrew! I have never heard of that DING application.. Hmm... I will definitely ask you (Once I see how much my check is) to watch for me! :) THanks so much!!

Shantis Mom
12-01-2005, 10:19 AM
Lisa the date will be March 11th. Closest airport is IAH Intercontinental - it is very close to my house - If you fly in there I could pick you up at the airport - We could book a room close to my house then you and Jason could drive up with Steve and I? If it is cheaper to go to Hobby - I can still pick you up depending on if I am working yet or not - But still you should stay out by me - Ill cook yall dinner and we can all go together!

If you do find a cheap SW fare and I can't get you maybe I can bribe Tammy? She works from home - well unless she hires me to clean her kennels then I would just have to ask her for some time off! ;)

MISS LISA
12-01-2005, 10:21 AM
Definitely! Okay, I will edit the title to say March 11th!

What hotels are near you??

Shantis Mom
12-01-2005, 10:23 AM
Let me do some checking - How much do you want to spend - I can narrow it down - I live right off a major Freeway in a busy part of the city - we have every price range available. Let me know and I will put a list together for you and PM it to you!

MISS LISA
12-01-2005, 10:28 AM
Well, I dont want a dumpy, crappy neighborhood.. as close to you, or another board member.. but I dont need a ritzy 5 Star either.. We might need to fly in early Friday morning, cause no point in spending $$ for a hotel room Thursday night, if we wont even get there till late..

Something close in a decent neighborhood for a decent price.. I dont know what hotel/motel rooms go for out there.. here you cant find anything in a decent area for less than $150 a night.. but I'd like to be cheaper if possible!

Shantis Mom
12-01-2005, 10:38 AM
OK no problem - we have many many hotels I can get you for less than a hundred that are decent. Ill put together a list and we can go from there! :)

Let's see ... I might be closer to you than I normally would be Dhana by then (read: Shreveport). All I know is I hope I am not still at this job, and I hope the other area of my life has "progressed." If I was coming from N.O., I would fly for sure. But if I were in Shreveport, that's only 3 hours from the big D. So we will just have to see how it plays out. Maybe after Dec. 16-18, I will know more! ;) If I did have Bella with me it would be more stressful on me b/c she takes a bit to warm up to other dogs, and doesn't tolerate the pushy dogs that don't "get" that very well  So it would be a lot for her to have so many new dogs all at one time. We'll have to see.

So, if I drive, it will be Joe and I, Abbie, Mary, and two of the labbies. Probably Mags and Sweetpea.(They are the best car riders of the bunch) We would need a pet friendly Hotel. I am already excited!!! I just need to find help with the people I take care of, but I got some good leads on that this morning. :)

Well, if you don't bring Bella would you leave her with her dad or at home? Either way works for us. Depending on what time the event starts, we will likely drive down Saturday morning. We have a little time to plan!

Kirsten, I would sooo love for you guys to make it! I'll have my girls with me too and both puppers of course! I'm bringing DH too, I just seem to be leaving him out of my conversations for some reason.

Lisa, before you make reservation...Hobby Airport is a MAJOR dumper. Darryl flew into that airport last year and they had probably 7 flights land at once and all the luggage was coming out on 3 luggage belts mixed together...it was a huge disasterous mess! So, pay the extra if you can and don't fly there or fly SW to Austin... :)

Lisa,

I live in Austin. PATEX is in NW Austin (airport code AUS). Lab Fest is about 90 minutes - 2 hours away. Houston Intercontinental's (IAH) closer, maybe an hour away?

Lab Fest is near Navasota, http://local.google.com/maps?q=navasota+tx&spn=0.678609,1.244614&hl=en

Lisa - I know Tammy said that Hobby was a disaster (and it obviously was for her husband) but I have flown in and out of it several times with no issues. I can't wait to hear all about your visit! I think we should consider some games for the dogs (kind of like the hot dog bob that they had up here) and competition (friendly of course) and assign the kids some responsibilities to keep them from getting bored. Well I think I have just returned from Lab Heaven! :) Sarah's property is absolutely amazing - 30 acres belonging to her and 50 belonging to her cousin - of ponds, creeks, fields, trails, wild mustang, cows, horses - beautiful homes and barns - WOW, Tammy and I are insanely jealous!!!!! Tammy took pics and hopefully she will get them posted this weekend but she's still a bit under the weather so please have patience.

I think the best thing to do is to start the festivities around 12:00 or so - We decided to BBQ Hamburgers, and Hot dogs as those are easy and don't require hours of attention. I will supply these along with buns and condiments. If anyone has a grill they can offer up it would be appreciated - I have a large pit and I don't think the pit, the food, a cooler, a margarita machine, me, the DH and the dogs are going to fit in my SUV. If one or two people have smaller grills that might be the way to go. Sarah will make Salads, Tammy will handle desserts. So maybe if ya'll could bring munchie foods or side dishes. I can start a list. As far as beverages I will bring the margaritas - It would probably be better if everyone brought whatever else they wanted to drink - soda's, beer whatever - and coolers and ice we will need coolers and ice. We are thinking about a between lunch and dinner meal - maybe 3:00 to 3:30.

As far as your dogs - As a point of reference this is not a dog park - altho the property is fenced to keep the horses and cows in - dogs could get out. It is a very big place - Practice recall with your dogs for the next 2 months! :) They are hoping to have one side of the barn corralled by the time we go - that would give us a place to put our pups while we eat-socialize.

Any ideas you guys want to throw out is greatly appreciated!

I would like to get a list started of who is def. coming - and have it somewhat finalized by say Feb 20th. That way I will know how much food I need to buy and Sarah can prepare herself mentally ;)

OK so Ill start
Kathy along with Steve (DH) Chance and Shanti

Next!

I was thinking, too, about drinking bowls for the dogs. We should bring those too, right?

Yes Allison your right - def anything your dog would need. Possibly frisbees, bumpers, toys, treats - whatever keeps um happy - it is their day!

Sounds like an awesome place! You can add David, me, the girls and both or our pups to the list of definites! Kathy, once the list is compiled I will be glad to make nametags for everyone including spouses and children. When we did the Labfest up here we put the screen name then real first name on the tags which helped everyone! Now that we know we'll start around noon, I'll come up with a schedule of times when we can have events for the dogs to compete. There won't be too many, but it will be something that is available if anyone wants to participate. I'm very excited about this! Allison and I can/will work together on stuff since we're not too far away!

Just a thought----should there be an alternative in case of rain? Not that it seems to be an issue at this point, but we MIGHT want to think about how to handle it if there is a major storm system that plants itself in the area that weekend.

sounds to me like this is going to be more of a national/international Lab Fest! I can't wait to meet all of you out of towners and of course those in Texas that I've yet to meet.
As Kathy said, Sarah's place is just amazing as are she and her husband. Kathy and I joked that we were going to be up there 'visiting' every single weekend w/ our dogs because it IS Lab/Dog HEAVEN. I've got to upload the pictures and will post them in just a bit.:)

Im not sure we can make a alternative plan - especially since we have so many folks coming from out of state and country for that matter. Id say its a rain or shine event - well unless it's a flood or a tropical storm? I guess if it rains we will bring umbrellas and hang out in the barn together?

Anyone else?

Well, I'm glad that I'll be surrounded by native Texans who know what to do when they encounter Texas flaura & fauna. As for me, you'll know which one I am -- I'll be reeking of Deep Woods Off, the perfume of the great outdoors. I've had chiggers once, and you know that saying that they have in TX -- "Fool me once... fool me once... well, ya don't get fooled twice!" Or, something to that effect!

alvin
01-15-2006, 09:39 AM
ooooh, Jill. I hadn't thought about the chiggers! I'll be reeking of OFF right along with you! LOL!

Kind of along those lines.....last night I started thinking about tics and the dogs. Our dogs are such city dogs, I don't even know, but is there anything we can give them to help repel tics? Those things really worry me.

PATEX
01-15-2006, 09:41 AM
Just Frontline, I guess. But it loses much of its effectiveness after week 3, so if it has been more than 3 weeks since your last application, you might want to give it to them again before they head into the great outdoors. Then, since they're both yellow, you can just look them over really well when they're done playing to be on the safe side.

Kathy & Tammy - Wayne defanged the bannister after you left - with luck we will have no more problems with it attacking unsuspecting guests. He also mentioned that our cousin was going to bring a big cooker down so we may have that covered on our end - I'll keep you apprised. It was so much fun meeting Kathy, Tammy & Morgan - wonderful to finally put some faces with names! We are looking forward to the 11th - come rain or shine. Goodness knows the dogs won't care and we have a fairly large area in the barn that is concrete where we could hang out. I will gladly provide a large potato salad but hope others will bring some as well, can't imagine peeling enough potatoes for this group.

No kidding! Once we have a good idea of how many are coming maybe we can have a sign up sheet to help split up some of the responsibilities for food. It will be easier for the Texas folks to bring enough to serve everyone from out of state. We can also buy a couple of big cans of beans and pickles, etc.

how far is that from Austin? It's been a few weeks since i've been on the board (moved from VA to TX) so I'm a little behind about the details of the tx lab fest! I've been dying to take Riley some where besides Bull Creek dog park here in Austin and I'm so excited to meet other Lab owners! Riley hasn't found a lab to play with it, the one we did is really fat and lazy and Riley is anything but that! Will someone post exact details with directions before the event? Count me in unless something comes up with work! (it better not!) I'm going try to get on the board more and chat now that I'm settled, well that's a relative term, now that I'm unpacked at least!
