View Full Version : Unusual things dogs eat

I don't know if all dogs eat the same kind of things. But today our dogs found the sugar beets that were put out for the deer and they LOVE them. Maverick got one and Thor stole it from him so Maverick had to go get another just for himself. Does anyone have stories of what their dogs like to eat?

Moonpie will eat anything. She does it with a cute piggy noise: "HHonnnmmpp"!

Avis is way more deliberate. She look at the bit, looks at me, looks at the bit, and then decides whether taking the the bit is in her best interest. It makes giving her her daily med a real challenge. Right now, a piece of buttery toast is the ticket.

D** n dog. She is definitely smarter than I am.

Ceilidh will steal tomatoes right off the plant!

Oh yes, and horsey poop is a favourite all around!

Mooonpie ate a cicada (locust) that divebombed her. Crunch, crunch. Also, woe to any flies that come too close.

Avis once ate a wasp that stuck its stinger in her mouth. Her head swelled up with all these bumps. It was funny but also scary. I rushed her to the vet for a steroid shot which eased the swelling.

I dropped a tic tac once and she gobbled it up in a split second. Now everytime she hears the noise the tic tac container makes when u shake some out of it .. she comes running and gives me the biggest beggin eyes I have ever seen on her LOL.
I think she found a new fav treat ... too funny :D

My lab loves to eat those little rubber clothes for the Polly Pocket dolls. Apparently they are not digestable as we find them speckling her poo.

The question is what WON'T Jazz eat! ;)

Grapes (I would let her have a couple every now and then until I found out they're BAD for doggies)

Carrots

Lettuce

The strings she rips out of her rope toy

Paper and cotton in ANY form (I leave it to your imagination!)

Pickles

And the all-time favorite horse poo when we visit Mom and Dad's!

LMAO. Moonpie like the Tootsie rolls she finds in the kitty litter box. How disgusting!!!! I have to clean twice daily . . .

Also, her daily med. I don't even have to load it into a piece of buttery toast or anything else. No it's not an edible.

Max has eaten birth control pills and light bulbs. That fiasco cost us a trip to the emergency vet!!! Other than that he doesn't get any human food. He's allergic to too many things to chance it.

Don't you love this? You can't feed them wheat or corn, but they'll eat a lightbulb !?! Don't you just know that if Max hadn't had to to go the vet and had been able to pass the lightbulb he would have been fine afterward?

Smokey once ate a relish fork and we didn't even know it until he pooped it out. And everyone on this board is familiar with the fact that he ate an entire Barbie car one time.

Woah! I am to new to have heard that one! LMAO!
Kona's new favorite treat is capri sun. If I squirt a little into her waterbowl when it is empty she will jump right on it. And when it is gone, she will still just lay there licking her bowl, hoping against hope that either a)some more will magically appear (i understand this because it often works:rolleyes: ) or b)that maybe, JUST MAYBE she missed some and will discover it along the side!
Any other labbies who drink things other than water?

Brawnwyn,

I realize that now. But the emergency vet was more worried about the birth control pills than the light bulbs. Although, I figured it was extra protection even after we got him neutered. Sometimes, though, I just wish, that when you call the vet and it is something as common as eating something unwanted, they would just tell you to make them throw up. It sure would have saved us a good amount of money and a harrowing trip in a thunderstorm! Thanks for the tip, though. I really appreciate it.

Dear Max's Mom:

I think you did exactly the right thing. My point (and I did have one :)) was that it's always been so wierd to me that labs will eat the most obnoxious, disgusting or dangerous things and seem to come out of it okay, but they are very sensitive to grains, of all things.

Smokey was just an amazing dog. We found the relish fork while picking up poo. What's really odd (and yet profoundly gross) is that it was a sterling fork and it looked like it had been newly polished when we cleaned it off. My husband used to say that we should put a tag on his collar that said:

"Not only will he eat your silver, he'll polish it too!"

:D

That is hilarious about polishing the silver!!!! Who knew they had such abilities? Although, I think every time I put that fork into relish I would get a little woozy...

Marley also loves the Polly clothes. I think it is the rubber they are made out of. I have found lots of shoes in her poop. Maybe her poop cleans those too but I will never know!!!

Annie ate $35 she found rolled up in my tennis shoe. Long story about why the money was there, but she found it!

BTW, someone posted once about what to give a dog if they eat glass. It had something to do with cotton balls soaked in something, but I don't remember what. Also, what do you give to make a dog throw up, and how much? Is it hydrogen peroxide?

funnygirl...that was me. I got a paper from our breeder called "The Cotton Ball" remedy. You soak the cotton balls in heavy cream (of course we know they will eat them). A large lab (70+lbs) should be given 7-10. The cotton will adhere to the glass/ornament if digested. I think it was a tablespoon of h.p. for the throw up.

Jack has eaten plastic hangers, glasses, (any human food), but his favorite is to eat and destroy my stepsons ImaginX castle.

Hi Everyone,

I am new to the board and had to share.

Diesel, my 7 year old black lab, loves anything from hangers to underware.

Favorites foods include rice (plain), bread, butter, cooked carrots, cheese, peanut butter, ice cream, all sorts of meat, and salsa and chips.

What a spoiled dog!

I used to have this stuffed bear (a very nice one) I'd been given many years ago. When Moonpie was a puppy - seven years ago - my wife came home from work and called me at the office.

"I hate to tell you this but YOUR DOG is in trouble." Moonpie had decapitated the bear, probably by pulling the eye off and going on from there. Stuffing was strewn all over the floor and reconstructive surgery was not an option. We never did find the eye . . .

Black Olive

So far the worst Olive has done is eat the nose from her stuffed puppy dog and her all time favorite is acorns. I try my best to get them from her but now when I go to do a mouth sweep she swallows them whole! And makes a loud GLUP noise while she does it! Kind of like HA HA in your face! BTW, Acorns poop out in their whole form if not properly chewed. She would eat anything in her path if I let her, though.

Now, Killian, that dog has eaten it all. He ate one of those glow sticks. Totally made his mouth foam like he had rabies! He drank a lot of water that day!

He also ate an entire bag of Hersey's Kisses. I was working at a daycare and I was going to give them to the kids as a treat. I totally blamed my brother for the missing kisses. Then one day while cleaning up doggy doo, I noticed some silver, green and red (it was Christmas time) sparkley things in the poo. We then KNEW why Killian had a sore hiney and where my Hershey Kisses went! The kicker is, he had to go into my nightstand drawer to get the bag out! Smart dog! This memory is fondly known as the "Hershey Squirt Experience" in our family.

OMG. How funny. Here it's pecans. I have a pecan tree in my front yard and Moonpie scarfs every pecan I and the squirrels don't pick up. Anyway, she lays down and breaks the shell between her molars then gradually picks out the nutmeat. I sometimes find shards of pecan shell when I clear the landmine field.

Pecan season has arrived. I'll try to get a photo of Moonpie in action. Eating pecans, that is.

All Avis does is put her nose to every one she finds. She slowly, leisurely, longingly sniffs each one. Did I say she leisurely sniffs each one? I hear her vacuum nose at work.

What a funny thread! By the stories posted here, Barkley has a very bland diet, but still pretty funny. I am a firm believer of giving Barkley veggies as treats, they're healthly and have a lower caloric content than puppy treats because he's growing too fast already! (don't worry he still gets his share of puppy treats as well) Here are some favorites:

Carrots..YUM. He now knows the word 'Carrot' and will jump through flaming hoops for one. Anytime I open the vegetable cripser regardless of where he is, he comes running.

Onions.. another delicacy for Barkley

Bananas. I think this is an acquired taste. Last trip the vet said the medicine tastes like bananas and 90% of dogs hate it.. not barkley, he was looking for seconds.

Cherry tomatos - (I think he just eats them because we do)

Asparagus, Broccoli, mushrooms..... and the wierdest one.... Garlic, although that was an accident and I don't recommend going there. About two hours later he was paying the price, and I was too in poop scooping the bakyard

Black Olive
10-16-2003, 08:46 AM
Barkley, be careful with the onions! I thought I remember reading that onions are bad, bad, bad for dogs!! You might want to do a search on it.

barkley
10-16-2003, 10:35 AM
Black Olive. Many thanks for the heads up I did some research and confirmed that Onions and Garlic can be deadly to a Lab. (Barkley got his hands on both when he dug them up in the garden) In retrospect, fortunately my brown thumb and unsuccessful gardening attempts only produced onions about an inch in diameter.

Lexi ate half of our Halloween Pumpkin. :(

Mr Kleb
10-19-2003, 07:16 PM
LOL! Which half - inside, back, or face?

This is neither unusual nor Lab but I laugh every time I remember it.

I was standing in the kitchen doorway one morning before heading to work, watching TV and eating a piece of buttery toast. Avis sat a respectful distance away. Not begging, but watching closely. I'd eaten about three bites. Then, to our mutual amazement, the toast jumped out of my hand and headed for the floor.

Had it landed right side up I probably would have picked it up, brushed any dog hair off, and eaten the rest. But NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOO. We both watched as in slow motion the delectable piece of buttery toast rotated 180 degrees and landed upside down.

Avis looked at the toast, looked at me, looked over my head, looked back at me, looked at the toast again, then yawned. And waited.

"OK, you can have it." Only then did she help herself.

What won't Guinness eat, is the real question...

The other day I was playing fetch with his ball outside, and noticed him chewing on something, well I thought it was the normal pine cone, or stick, or rock, etc. But when I opened his mouth to fish it out, I found a big wad of gum!! YUCK! Well I took it out and threw it in the garbage, and we continued playing. I noticed again a few minutes later that again he had something in his mouth. Again, I went to fish it out, and low and behold, another wad of gum!!! I think he was sniffing around for pepermint because he liked the taste of the gum so much!!

YUCK!! is right! When Avis was young I came home and was surprised to find her still in the yard because my wife was already home, and the first one there let the dogs in. On closer inspection I saw gray and white feathers sticking out of her mouth - she'd ambushed a mockingbird. (Those of you living in the South know that's quite a feat - mockingbirds are quick and clever creatures.) Avis stayed outside a while longer.

When Moonpie was a young girl she ate a frog - a toad, actually. She munched it down, then foamed at the mouth and turned glassy-eyed. She drank some water, threw up outside, then slept for about an hour. I wasn't too worried because I'd gone through this with Avis.

Moonpie hasn't eaten one since.

Averysmom

Yup, Avis didn't keep the mockingbird down for long. That was about 11 years ago. She's almost 14 now and has lost her quickness so mockingbirds are out of the question, but her eyesight is still A-1. After dark tonight, she sighted in on our walking companions as they crossed a bridge about 75 yards away and were illuminated by only a streetlight.

As for Moonpie - yes, a toad. She learned how from Avis. Disgusting. Fortunately, she swore off them after that experience. Toads hop around my yard when it's wet, and all 'Pie does now is pounce on and sniff them.

Ok, first I have to make the distinction between chew into confetti and actually consume (swallow).
Earnest confettis toothbrushes (I'm on my 6th in almost a year-it doesn't matter where I hide them maybe it's the mint toothpaste?) floppy disks, books, and artifical plants.
He swallows Legos,(that's some colorful poo) photograph slides (the film part dissolves, the cardboard passes, Kodak says not poisonous) and any container that might have had food in it at one time. I have to be really careful with trash, I find plastic stuff in his poo all the time, ziploc bags and candy wrappers.
He really likes "kittie crunchies" out of the cat box. horse biscuits, and goose poo.
All of this from a dog who thinks the Kong is some kind of trap. (there would be an exclamation point there, but Earnest somehow detached that key and ate it. )
Any treat put in the Kong becomes inedible poison. He won't eat peanut butter (which he liked before) because I used it in the Kong. He won't eat the brand of dog biscuit I tried in there either.
He hides the Kong under my bed and behind the couch, by pushing it with his paws and nose. He WON'T pick it up in his mouth-- it's poison. If I accidentally put it in his kennel when I'm putting toys away he either pushes it out, or if HEAVEN FORBID I lock him in the kennel with it he "buries" it under his bed way in the back corner. I always know when it's in there because he's laying up against the door, eyeing that corner suspiciously.
I wish I could transfer the "Kong Kooties" to all the other things, my problems would be solved.

By the way, if you live in the South watch out for toads-those big bufo toads can kill your dog-they excrete deadly poison.

Ok...here's the thread for me! Bailey (5 yrs black lab) has literally eaten me out of house and home. As a pup he ate the traditional items; couch, pillows, blankets, gyp-rock and even a paycheck once...but later he really developed an appetite...he's probably eaten 500 loaves of bread and 300 boxes of crackers. He's eaten butter, a pot of grease and 6 frozen pork chops the same day. He ate 2 family packs of hamburger and 4 pounds of xmas candy. When we go to bed at night we have to make sure all the dishes are clean and put away. If not, we hear "clink, clink, clink" as he takes the silverware out of the sink to lick off any remaining food. He's put a good dent in an 18 kg bad of food one day. I can't leave a fruit basket anywhere at his level without finding banana peels on the floor. If that isn't bad enough, he is even a water glutten. If the water bucket goes below half, he will stand there and drink the rest so his sister Daphne won't get any. But I sure do love him anyway!

Moose has this thing for litter box tootsie rolls, too.
Everytime I caught him in the litter box, I put soap on a rag and cleaned his mouth out with it. But that didn't stop him.
So I finally had to move the litter boxes into another room and block that room with baby gates. I put the cat food in there too so the cats can eat in peace.

Oh, if I happen to let Moose out the front door, he runs to this natural area in our yard under some trees and hunts for squirrel poop.

Why does he have this infatuation for poop?

Dayzee prefers the big dog food and the cat food over her own. I just don't understand why. Must be because she can't have it that makes her want it so bad. We will find her coming into the living room carrying the cat food dish in her mouth without even spilling any of it. It's funny to see. And she LOVES ice cubes. I discovered that when I accidentally dropped one on the floor and she went nuts over it.

We had a warm spell... this past Saturday it was 72. It came back down to the 30s yesterday. I was out with Java and she was sniffing and nibbling at the ground... I though it was for leaves or grass, but then I put my hand in her mouth to see and it was a shriveled, slightly chilled earth worm! I guess they came out when it was warm and then got 'left out in the cold.' :p: Sounds gross, but not as bad as cat poop. We don't have one, but there are neighborhood cats who like to leave their treasures for Java to hunt.
