UPDATE June 1, 2005
Buster passed the fecal exam and heartworm test with flying colors. He didn’t respond to the name (Kasey) we were calling him when we first found him and he didn’t respond to the name (Nick) which is the name his former owners gave him so we’ve changed his name to Buster. He seems to have taken to that name quite well. He was such a good boy at the vet and since he's starting a new life with a new name we figured a new collar was needed as well. We'll try to snap a photo tonight to share with everyone.

He is truly coming out of his shell and is much more outgoing and puppyish than when we first found him. The vet tech last night seemed to think based on finding no plaque on his teeth that he is probably closer to 1 year old than 2 years old as we originally guessed his age to be. Initially he barked quite a bit when left alone but after a couple days training, his barking when left alone has practically been eliminated. Occasionally he does forget but a simple scolding stops the barking for the night. He is starting to come when called but not yet on any kind of reliable basis. He now sits on command pretty reliably. We are working on “wait” because he wants to bolt out of any door-he seems eager to start any new adventure (now we know how he got to be a stray). Another command we are working on is the “off” command because he is now taken to be very exuberant when he first sees you after spending a bit of time alone but again calms down quickly when corrected.

He has shown no desire to dig or really play with any toys but he loves playing with other dogs. We have not found a single person that he doesn’t like yet. He has started giving an occasional doggy kiss when you ask for one—truly a boy just looking for someone that will treat him as if he is the best dog in the world and rightly so I might add. He will make some family a great pet. We are going to try to start a doggy diary for him that we can give to his new adopters so they will know just how far he has progressed since he came to stay with us.

Puppy hugs and kisses for now,
Foster mom Sue and Buster

Funny thing is. Intellectually I know there are other things I should be working on with him such as crate training, confirming his housetraining status and STAY but I'm afraid of getting too emotionally attached. So we're just working on some easily trainable things instead.

We want to retire within the next 12 to 18 months and cannot afford 5 pets on a retiree's income.

Give me clerical work, fundraising, events - no problem - fostering whew! I'm sure when we find him a home it will be all worthwhile but for now I feel like I'm neglecting not only him but all my babies. :tissue:
