View Full Version : Video of dog being X-rayed for OFA kellymccoy 05-03-2008, 05:50 AM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQYt-yV4nU8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwuYLoFByag very simple easy process she was up and running around an hour later!! HeatherGlenES 05-03-2008, 05:34 PM Interesting but I had OFAs done on both my English Setters without sedation which made it an even easier process since they were up immediately running around. I was told, by both of the breeders I got my boys from, that it is actually better to have the x-rays done without sedation since sedation can cause the joints to relax too much and you might not get a true rating. Luckily there is an excellent "breeder friendly" vet in our area who takes fabulous OFA x-rays. kellymccoy 05-04-2008, 03:56 AM I did them for many years without sedation also but Gsd's especially are strong and not always willing to lay on their back its just easier to sedate them as many as I do.for prelims I sometimes do them without ,that will be the next show! so what rating did yours come out with?? Logan is Excellent Hips, Normal Elbows (http://heatherglen.acinny.com/logan/logancertificates.html) and Hamish is Good Hips, Normal Elbows (http://heatherglen.acinny.com/hamish/hamishcertificates.html). kellymccoy 05-04-2008, 03:14 PM good for you!! beautiful dogs!!!! DarwinsMom 05-04-2008, 04:51 PM Mild sedative here. They're a bit "stoned" for a bit, but they're ready to rock by the time you get back home. kellymccoy 05-05-2008, 04:55 AM that dog was done with propophyl..she was awake within 30 mins of being knocked out..it is not feasable to do every dog without it I have had big male Imoprts that it would not be a good idea to tell someone to wrestle them on their back!! labguides 06-27-2008, 11:32 PM What is the difference between OFA and Penn Hip? SoCalLabLover 06-28-2008, 12:54 AM What is the difference between OFA and Penn Hip? OFA is basically a database for a variety of different diseases as well as an organization that provides a way to "rate" orthopedic (especially joint) health. This is done through the use of board-certified veterinary radiologists that are employed by OFA specifically to "rate" orthopedic health based on radiographic findings (from "x-rays" or radiographs taken in a specific position but which can be done by any veterinarian). PennHIP is for hips only and evaluates the quality of the hip joint and measures the laxity of that hip joint under sedation. It is done through specific radiographs (again of the dog in specific positions) as well as manipulation/measurements done by veterinarians specifically trained in this method. The ratings are different, as are the ways in which each rating is obtained. More (and much better) explanations can be found on their respective sites: OFA- http://www.offa.org/hipinfo.html http://www.offa.org/elbowinfo.html OFA Grading and how other countries' grading compares: http://www.offa.org/hipgrade.html PennHIP- http://www.pennhip.org/ (look at the "What is PennHIP?" and "PennHIP Method" links on the menu at the left-hand side of the screen, especially...there is some great information if you just read and follow the links) Noel's Mom 06-28-2008, 08:12 AM When Noel was having problems with her leg, they sedated her and took x-rays of her leg and hips. Vet said they tried to do it without sedation, but she was to hyper. She was fine after we got home. |
