View Full Version : Waiting list

My husband and I currently have two Rottweilers, but we're pretty sure that we want a Lab "next go 'round." We are looking for a show bred dog from a reputable breeder. I'd prefer for the dam and sire to be titled (as well as the grandparent's and great grandparent's etc.)

How long, typically, is a waiting list going to be? We're still a few years from wanting a pup, but it's never too early to learn, right?

TIA!

Good idea to start educating yourself early. But do be carefull as this board can be a very bad influence. Just check out the thread about "What has the board made you buy". ;)

I believe my first post here was about January 21st. I was just doing some research on the different types of labs & maybe talk about some Michigan breeders. And then a big surprise to us, we went to look at a puppy on January 23rd.... And Mousse came home with us!

There is alot to learn here! Welcome to the Board :)

LOL! I completely understand. I actually belong to a Rottie board and have to be careful there too. Luckily, I have a budget. LOL!

As far as getting a Lab anytime soon, I know that won't be an issue. I'm lucky that I have quite a few years left with our Rotties, and it won't be until they pass that we will purchase a pup.

Thanks for the heads up though! :thumb4:

Oh I guess I didn't even answer your waiting list question.

Here in Michigan we have a large number of reputable breeders for labradors. I think Chocolate is the least common color.

So take that in to account which color you are looking for, and it will probably help with how long the wait would be.

Mousse was a leftover, we didn't wait. I'd suppose January isn't the most popular time to be wanting a puppy. And we were in the right place (here on this board) at the right time.

I'm looking for a Yellow Lab. I guess it wouldn't hurt to find the breeder of choice and then contact them to see what their policies are.

What part of So Cal? If you want to find a reputable breeder both SoCalLabLover (Julie) and I know many breeders through much of CA, so we can recommend or point you in the right direction.

Waiting lists are tricky. Some breeders breed VERY infrequently and have long lists. Others take a few names, then need to find buyers if they end up with a larger litter.

It's good to start looking ahead because sometimes the wait can be really long. You may want to be a bit flexible so that when the "right" breeder and "right" pup come along, you can take one. Whether it's a year or 2 years from now.

I'm going to PM SoCalLover. Thanks!

I'd take one tomorrow if I could. :D Two dogs is our max though right now especially with the two we have. Unfortunately they were not socialized properly. :(

I'm off to PM Julie!

Thanks again.

So nice to see beautiful rottweilers with tails! We were torn between getting a rottweiler and a lab and we wound up going with lab but your dogs are especially lovely. I wish I got more chances to see them with tails.

That's the crazy part about this... you never know when a puppy will just come to you!! Years, months, weeks, days, right now!!!

We were ready to get on a long list when we decided on a breeder we liked. *BAM* a buyer backed out at the last minute and because we were in the right place at the right time with the right friends... we had our girl!

It's a good idea to start early, get involved, make some contacts. Enjoy the journey!

I agree with everything that has been posted so far. Do your research way ahead of time. When I got Kiley, it was about a year in the making. I researched several breeders, had meetings with them, saw their dogs and kennels, looked at the pedigrees and the clearances. After I made up my mind and I then checked references. Once I had done all that, I was on the waiting list for about 9 months.
