View Full Version : Want to adopt lab
outdoorsman 02-03-2007, 05:08 PM I am interested in adopting a Lab. I live near Elmira, NY. I had two, a black and a yellow. I had the black from 9 weeks and I adopted the yellow at 2 years old. They were approx a yr apart in age. I lost one in 05 and the other this past November. They were both 12 years old. It was very difiicult. We are now ready to get another. We have two children 5 and 6 months. We live in the county and have 40 acres of land. We built a pond near our house for the other dogs. I would love to get a dog I could train to hunt with me again. The one I had as a puppy did the other didn't. This is not a priority as I don't have a lot of time to spead training a dog to hunt thus I am not really wanting a puppy at this time either. My wife and I agree it would be nice to have a dog that is house broken and past the hyper stage probably between two and 6. I can't take a senior just because we can't go through that pain again right away. That is why we would like to adopt one that needs a good home. The only other thing that would be nice is to have a dog that can be out without a leash. We like to go for walks and let them out to the bathroom without having to go with them. I understand I would for a while but I guess I just don't want one that sprints away if on its own.
Karen519 02-03-2007, 07:11 PM It is very hard to lose a good friend. I have been through it many times.
I have a Samoyed and a Golden Retriever.
There are many dogs in Kill Shelters or bad situations that need good homes.
Are you interested in only a purebred lab or a mix?
Here is a Black Lab that really needs a home.
Boomer Baby Black Lab needs homes of his own
he is the lab with the broken leg at the vets at fulton county, they havent had any enquiries on him yet, his pic is posted on their petfinder he is a good looking dog, I just thought if someone saw his pic it might prompt them to action.
this is my original thread on him

LisaM1190 02-03-2007, 07:33 PM We live in Buffalo, NY and we have a lab from Labs Landing in Darien NY.
www.labslanding.com (http://www.labslanding.com) they are wonderful dogs, great temperment, great with kids and my last one loved to hunt. Beth is a wonderful breeder who adores all of her fur babies. If you are interested in a rescue try Rudy's Rescue, in Rochester NY,www.rudysrescue.org (http://www.rudysrescue.org/) . We are looking at adopting a rescue as a companion to our current baby Maggie. Good Luck!
outdoorsman 02-04-2007, 05:15 AM Thanks, Those dogs were our kids for years. I would prefer a pure bred, I would feel more comfortable with a pure bred around my children. I am trying to gauge how much activity they are needing. Now I have little time to spend after work because it is dark so early, summer will be better. I have a 6 month and a 5 yr old son that take alot of time and limits the time I can spend outside with the dog. I don't have a fenced in area and don't really want one. I want to be with the dog when its out except for go out to the bathroom. I figured one over two probably closer to 3 or four would be better. I can't afford one that needs alot of (know)medical care at this point. Diapers and daycare are expensive. I guess I am cautiously trying to guage and find the best fit, for dog and us. I looked at Rudys and they have a beautiful young male, I am just not sure how much activity he would need. One of mine required a ton the other not so much.
autumnsmom 02-04-2007, 12:55 PM One of mine required a ton the other not so much.
True..searching for a dog in a foster home is your best bet. The foster family will be able to let you know the activity level etc, how well they do with small children. I've had a few that would fit your needs they are out there just waiting for a home like yours. Good luck!
outdoorsman 02-04-2007, 01:38 PM I sent an application to Ruby's rescue, hopefully something will work out.

Karen519 02-05-2007, 04:35 AM Purebred 5 yr. old Black Lab Mindy-needs a home..
This sweet girl is being fostered in North Carolina and needs a home.
MINDY is a purebred black lab and she is 5 years old. She weighs 71 pounds, but feels much heavier because she is lean and quite muscular. I'm attaching some pictures I just took of her. It was an act of congress to get a picture of her head/face as most of the time I'm looking at her butt sticking out from under the bed where her head is watching the kitties! Thanks again for all of your help. She is definitely a sweetheart and does pretty well when left in the house alone (although learning some bad habits from my lab!). She'd be the perfect lab for someone because she's already housebroken and is through the chewing phase -- it doesn't get any better than that!!!! Thanks,
Pls. contact Julianne, her Foster Mom!

Transport can be worked out.

outdoorsman 02-26-2007, 06:04 PM Yes, this board is great! Finally got some pictures.
outdoorsman 02-26-2007, 06:08 PM another
outdoorsman 02-26-2007, 06:17 PM It will be interesting to see her reaction when she realizes there is a pond in the side yard. Probably won't be for a while now. What is interesting is that I have talked to a lot of people that have not thought about getting dogs from rescues. I think I have convinced a bunch of people that it is a good thing. People that have met Mindy are very impressed. She is a good dog.
Karen519 02-26-2007, 06:24 PM Dave:
What beautiful pictures of Mindy!! She sure LOOKS HAPPY!!!
Yes, wait until she discovers all that is in her backyard!!!
Rescue Dogs are wonderful!! The Female Samoyed, Munchkin, we rescued years ago was an "Angel," had very soulful eyes and My Female Golden Retriever, Smooch, we have now is a love!! Smooch is very affectionate and needy, which I love in a dog!!
Dogs are so grateful when you save them-they know!!!
Is Mindy "an only dog" now? :o:  :o:
gatorblueyes 02-26-2007, 07:52 PM Great pics! She does look happy...what a lucky girl! This is heartwarming!
Lovemylabby 02-26-2007, 08:37 PM Wonderful pictures!
Mindy looks very happy and content! A very lucky girl!

outdoorsman 02-28-2007, 06:55 PM She has been running every night. She chases snowballs as far as I can throw them. She is an "only dog" right now. Maybe this summer we will get another. There are some really nice pictures people have on this post.
Fletcherjm 03-01-2007, 01:01 PM I just checked back here...so happy for you and your family!!
