Is there a certain weight limit - or a prefered weight for dock dogs.

My Chocolate Lab weighs close to 90lbs, but loves jumping off the docks at the lake to get sticks. Just not sure if this is something to get into with his HUGE size.

Thanks for the info.

Weight doesn't really matter. I've seen huge dogs and tiny dogs do it. The level he jumps at is based on how far he can jump. For example, if he can only jump 3', then he will compete with other dogs jumping within that range. I honestly think it's great exercise and great fun for any dogs, regardless of weight. The only concern I would have is height. I know some taller dogs might actually hit the bottom...

There are no limits I'm aware of, but obviously a lean, strong dog will likely jump farther than a heavier, strong dog.

I don't think there is a weight limit. I've seen huge dog's competing... Just as I've seen very lean dogs competing.

ok, thanks

I have seen dock dogs on TV, but have never checked into it. Denson is a HUGE dog, but can jump pretty far and will jump after anything.

I may have to check into the Georgia chapter and see this is something doable.

It looks so awesome on tv, I bet the events are a blast to go to, if nothing else, I would just like to go to an event and check it out.

Thanks

We have a HUGE lab in our club. Not fat, just big....right at 100 lbs. He's one of the top EV dogs in the country.

If you want to seriously compete, then obviously lean is better. But any dog can have fun jumping no matter what the weight is!!:D:D:D

Are you talking about Pepper? He was 85 in November.. he must have put on some winter weight :)

I personally think leaner is better, same goes for agility- less weight, less stress on their bodies. I know in our experience, our dogs do much better in both agility and dock jumping when they are as lean as possible.

From what I see in the sport, the thicker dogs get tired quicker and don't fly as high. But everyone always has fun. :D

I don't think weight makes a huge difference, but then again I'm really new to dock diving so what do I know lol. We went to our first event this weekend and we saw dogs of all shapes and sizes jumping. There was a massive rottweiler jumping with a HUGE block head and he was getting some incredible distance. There was also a pembroke welsh corgi jumping and she too was getting some good distance with her itty bitty legs (it was hilarious to see her swimming!). I saw big dogs, little dogs, lean dogs, meaty dogs, and everything in between. I always think leaner is better on any pup, it's just healthier overall. I love seeing pups when they're muscles are well defined, and they have beautiful coats they just look healthy to me.
