View Full Version : Wellness food makes Cosmo's coat smell horrible!
Cosmo's Mom 11-21-2005, 10:52 AM At least I'm guessing it's Wellness. Actually, it may be a host of things. I've noticed that since switching from Natural Balance to Wellness, Cosmo's coat has started having a stronger "dog" smell and his breath stinks even worse now (even hours after he's eaten). Do you think that the food could actually make his fur smell? When he was on NB I rarely, if ever, noticed a dog smell on him, but now it's horrible - even when I pet him I smell it on my hands. He's getting older and bigger now, so that may have something to do with it, but do you think it's possible that his food is a big contributor? I'm not sure why I switched him from NB to begin with, but I'm definitely going to gradually switch him back when this bag of food is almost out! I'm not happy with Wellness at all.
Kahlua's Mom 11-21-2005, 11:14 AM I may be having the same issues with Kahlua. Right now, we're treating her for seasonal allergies and an ear infection. She's on her second bag of Wellness and I too switched her from NB (for convenience, I know that sounds horrible, but Wellness is easier to get). She didn't have this problem last year, so I'm thinking it may be the food. I've not noticed an odor from her coat, but her breath has become more stinky.
Dad of Jes 11-21-2005, 11:45 AM Yes, it's entirely possible that it's the food, especially if you have a dog that doesn't tolerate grains very well as Wellness has quite a few.
Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Oatmeal, Ground Barley, Ground Brown Rice, Rice Bran (from brown rice), Rye Flour, Canola Oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols, a natural source of vitamin E), Whitefish, Tomatoes (natural source of lycopene), Natural Chicken Flavor, Flaxseed, Ground Millet, Carrots, Apples, Spinach, Blueberries, Sweet Potatoes, Calcium Carbonate, Dicalcium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride
azawinsky 11-21-2005, 11:59 AM Sounds like your babies have a concentrated amount of yeast in their body. Aowyn has the same problem so we are staying away from products that have yeast in them. Dad of Jes pointed out all of the yeastie products in Wellness. Since then she smells less yeastie and I think its hleping with her allergies. Which is a constant fight.
diver03 11-21-2005, 12:29 PM Wellie eats Welllness F&SP. It doesn't have the grains the regular formula does, I haven't noticed any smell.

Cosmo's Mom 11-21-2005, 01:55 PM So, if it's a yeast issue (that's probably exactly what it is), I should go with the NB Potato and Duck since it has less yeast products, correct? I know a lot of people like the P&D formula, but I just started him out on the Venison formula b/c the food store people said it was what they gave their dogs. You have been a great help, Dad of Jes, thanks!!
Kahlua's Mom 11-21-2005, 02:10 PM I was giving Kahlua the regular formula by NB... That's what I'm going back to b/c she was doing so well on it before I went and switched her food... Cosmo's Mom, what formula from NB were you feeding before you switched to Wellness

Cosmo was on the Venison and Brown Rice formula. He did exceptionally well on it, and the only reason I switched it was b/c we had a sample bag of Wellness and he devoured it when I put it in his bowl. Since then, though, he hasn't liked it as much - I guess he went crazy b/c it was a new flavor or something. I may try the regular NB since it doesn't seem to have any yeast products in it. He wasn't smelly at all when he was on NB (with the exception of when he went outside and came back in).
Black Labbies 11-21-2005, 02:32 PM How are Cosmo's ears, any reaction to the Wellness in there?
Another ingredient that can make dogs coats stink is the oil the kibble is preserved in, it may have gone rancid. preserved with mixed tocopherols, a natural source of vitamin E
labby 11-21-2005, 02:33 PM Potatos are not recommended for a dog or human with yeast problems.

His ears seem fine to me - not dirty or anything. I haven't noticed a smell either.

It depends on if the grains are even the culprit. More than likely the rices are fine, and as Labby indicated the potatoes may not be the best.
JenQuinn 11-21-2005, 09:01 PM My Bailey eats Wellness- and I've never noticed a smell. His ears have been on the yucky side and we just started cutting wheat out of his diet- Mainly OMH treats that are pretty much all wheat. Before switching his food- which he still seems very happy to eat- I'm changing his treats/
Hitch 12-05-2005, 08:28 AM We changed from NB D&P - past 2 bags -problems...smelly! Very smelly paws & body! Not eating too well, paw licking, etc. Changed to Wellness Venison - so far so good it's about 4 wks. No smell - except the normal frito paws. Body - no smell.
