View Full Version : went from Canidae to Innova, not happy so far
ravendave 08-03-2008, 06:49 AM I changed Kodiak to Innova and so far his stools are still not where i would like. I gave it a bit of time since he was sick a week plus he got neutered but this bag is almost empty and still he isn't where he was before canidae changed their food. I am not sure which food to try next. What food would be closest or better then the original Canidae ALS
ravendave 08-03-2008, 07:18 AM I am actualy tempted to try canidae again, he did slightly better on that then he is on innova and he liked it better i think
missretta 08-03-2008, 07:42 AM Which formula of Innova are you feeding? Were you feeding Canidae ALS before?
Lovemylabby 08-03-2008, 07:50 AM Innova tends to be very rich and it may take some time for your dog to adjust to it. You really need to give a new food at least a month or so to determine whether it is working or not.
Innova is an excellent food made with quality ingredients.
uplander 08-03-2008, 08:37 AM try adding a spoonful of plain low fat yogurt to the kibble each feeding.. It really helps get the gut into shape.
Innova is a great food ..but you need to feed way less or loose stool can occur.. Over feeding is most likely the issue... but even good foods will sometimes not work for a particular dog... For example, HealthWise, a cheaper product from Natura was digested better in my Jazz girl. Or a Cal Nat Product may be better.

This isn't true if the OP is feeding Innova Large Breed Puppy, you have to look at the kCal (for one) and the milk products in yogurt can create havoc in some dogs.
GussyandHudson 08-03-2008, 09:41 AM Innova is a rich food and we needed to go through a couple of bags before my dogs were truly adjusted to it.
uplander 08-03-2008, 10:21 AM My lab pup just loves yogurt and gets no milk problems.. sorry for not saying a very small amount of the worlds dogs don't (in that case one can use a store bought probiotic, the best being refrigerated ones.)
On the Innova web site it mentions over feeding as being the main reason for loose stool. It's a fairly complex food for a pup.. If you start with smaller portions you are giving the gut a better chance to adjust. You can add more if weight loss occurs.
Everyone has different feeding opinions.. there are only a few foods not to feed a dog and easily found in this webs search engine. A healthy pup should be able to eat small tastes of most human foods. And if not its most often the guts flora that is not in balance if it can not. Dogs are scavengers.
Another wonderful food to try is Eagle Pack Lg./giant Breed Pup.
Wellness just put out a trial size bag of it's Lg. Breed Pup with a $ 5.00 coupon on the back of the bag... I picked up one to try and the pup likes the taste..
margeka 08-03-2008, 10:21 AM It took our dog 1 bag mixed with a bag of the old Royal Canin, then strictly Innova for him to poop less and the stools were fine.
3dognite 08-03-2008, 11:26 AM I think it's always important to remember that not all dogs do well on the same foods - misretta's post about milk products is a reminder that for some dogs, even yogurt is off limits. Those dogs would even be advised to stay away from Innova, since it contains cottage cheese.
Innova, like the new Canidae, is indeed one of the more complex foods, and contains some of the ingredients identified as "potential problems" in the new Canidae - barley, potatoes and even the flaxseed found in some Innova foods have all been reported to cause problems for some dogs on this board. Unfortunately, even though a company is well respected and the ingedients of a particular food look appealing, there are no guarantees that it will work for all dogs.
It does sound like a longer than expected transition period may be necessary for Innova. The same has been reported for the new Canidae. If you are fortunate, perhaps patience is all that will be needed. Good luck. :)
kattzoo 08-03-2008, 12:54 PM I love the Innova line, but it may not be for your pup. My senior thrives on it, and it didn't get along with our puppy at all. (cats do great on it too) Like the others suggested, I'd make sure he's not overeating, and then decide if you want to give it another try, or if it's time for a switch.
ravendave 08-03-2008, 03:10 PM he has been on it more then a month now, and he is on innova large breed puppy, i even tryed the plain yogurt, doesn't help alot, i mean it does sometimes but other times he has soft looking stools, never loose but not as firm as i would like...
Lorunner1213 08-03-2008, 05:30 PM We had the same thing with our pup. Tooke her a while to adjust with Innova. Now shes got good stool but shes not really all that crazy with it. If we give her 3 cups in the morning (6 AM) she usually doesnt finish it until 10PM. We have a bag of beniful for training her to sit, stay, etc. If i mix a cup of that in with the Innova she eats it like crazy. Im even tempted to get some wet Innova and give her a mix and see how she takes to that.
WrigleyBlue 08-04-2008, 09:10 AM We actually transitioned from Canidae ALS (old formula) to Innova LBP a while back and he's doing beautifully. I can't remember how long it took (he was having loose stool issues unrelated to food).
Good luck!!!!

I was convinced that Innova wasn't a smart decision because I was switching from Blue Buffalo. Stools were very soft in the beginning and he had terrible gas but I kept on Feeding my marley Half (innova) and Half (blue buffalo) for 3 weeks straight until I finally switched him to innova for good. He is currently doing very well on Innova with firm stools and no more gas.
ravendave 08-09-2008, 03:03 PM I wrote this a few days too soon, he firmed up and is doing great now so I got another big bad of Innova large breed pup
HeatherGlenES 08-09-2008, 05:12 PM The breeder/owner of the litter I am raising went from Canidae ALS to Breeder's Choice Heath Food For Dogs (http://www.breeders-choice.com/dog_products/healthfood.htm). We compared labels and Breeder's Choice Health Food For Dogs is almost exactly the same as the old formula Canidae ALS. So far it is working great for the mom and puppies. You might want to give it a try and see what happens.
xpeetypx 08-10-2008, 12:23 AM I just switched from Canidae ALS to Innova LB Puppy and results have been great. My 11 month old Chopper, is fully on Innova now but my 3 month old Onyx is half and half still. I got maybe a 1/4 left on the Canidae ALS before I make the full switch on her.
