My breeder feeds a food by the name of TLC (I know several Lab breeders in Ontario use this food) and it appears to have a good ingredient list. I took my lab to the vet yesterday and although he didn't say the food was bad he gave me the standard list of recommended foods (Iams, Eukanuba, ProPlan or SD). Which leaves me feeling uncertain ... all i want for my pup is the best and I don't believe that my breeder or vet would give me harmful advice ... but now I keep wondering if I should look at a switch?!!?

I feed my cats Wellness and have had really positive results on that but again its not a food recommended by my vet. My pup is starting to have slightly runny poop ... could this be the food or should I give it a couple of days to see if he adjusts (he just came home on saturday)??? Have others felt confused by all of this??

Any advice or opinions would be welcomed.

Feed what your breeder recommends. Generally breeders know better than vets what works for their dogs. Plus the breeder is the one guaranteeing the pup so its always best to follow their advice.

I'd keep the pup on what the breeder recommended too. Her dogs are used to it and the pup has enough changes right now without having his food changed too.

Vets recommend lots of different foods. Most of them are not animal nutritionists. There are alot of foods out there and alot of people who can sing the praises of each and criticize other foods.

Keep the pup on what he's used to and take this time to learn about what's in food and make a decision for when it IS time to switch the pup to a more adult food, you have something picked out that you feel is good for your dog. You might not ever need to change brands if your pup thrives on what it is eating.

Thanks for the advice ... I think I am going to put some cottage cheese in his food (or pumpkin) and see if that firms things up. Its so helpful to have this board to help with my many puppy questions.
