View Full Version : Would like an opinion....please!
Charlene-renee 09-24-2009, 01:42 PM For the last hour or so I have read several post on this thread in regards to American or English. Field Version or Show Lab, Blockheads and so on. So now my curiosity has peaked. What would everyone say my Charlie is? Trust me, I will not be offended because I could not have created a more perfect dog for my family and me if we had created him ourself in a science fiction lab.
Random Gemini 09-24-2009, 01:49 PM He looks field to me. (and oh so adorable!!! I want to kiss that nose!)
English/show/bench/British dogs tend to be shorter, broader chested and have a head to match their ears, but also their noses tend to be almost a perfect square shape and also shorter than a field dog's nose will be. Short boat tails are a hallmark here.
Field/Hunting/American dogs tend to be taller, thinner and have a more elongated snout, with a longer tail.

I second this!
Smackbelly&ThePone 09-24-2009, 01:53 PM Field. I just wanna wrap myself up in those big honkin' ears!

Do you think his head will grow into them?:floor
Random Gemini 09-24-2009, 01:56 PM I think the ears are gonna be hard to tell. Mugen is getting the "big dumbo ears" that his breeder warned me would show up some time between now and six months of age and stick around until he grew into his "big old clown feet to match". She said that all of Mugen's sire's puppies do this, and yet to look at the sire, his ears seem perfectly proportionate to his head, not big, or dumbo at all. She said that he would grow into the dumbo ears and not to worry about the awkward gangly phase.
So... I'm not sweating it. In fact, I think it's kinda cute. :D

Gawd, I hope not! The bigger the ears, the better if ya ask me!

I play peek-a-boo with his ears. I cover his eyes and say...wheres charlie? Then take his ears off his eyes and say, There he is. He loves it! I am such a bad mother!
bsdamron 09-24-2009, 02:16 PM I'm no expert in this field, but I do know... he is adorable!!
CanyonLabradors 09-24-2009, 02:54 PM For me, the designation "Field" or "Show" depends more on the pedigree, not necessarily the look. But if I had to guess with the few photos, field.

I agree.
Field bred means there are lots of field titles in the pedigree (close pedigree, not only going back 4+ generations). Bench/show bred would mean lots of show titles (ch for example, and higher) in the pedigree. Sometimes there is abit of a mix of both more more of one.
ALOT (and I am tempted to say most) labs we see day to day are pet bred, meaning there may be a few titles in the pedigree but few and far apart. They may look more field or more show or a mix of both.
Looks wize yes - your pup looks lean and leggy (though he appears young...) so more fieldish...
The above is just my personal view on things...
uplander 09-25-2009, 08:47 AM All Labs are Labs...Yours is very beautiful....if you don't know the dogs background you must wait and see the finished product... I thought at one point my pups ears were very long..they fell into his bowl when eating at 4 months old..Today at 21 months they are normal....The ears seem to grow long first and the rest of the head catches up...
Give that pup a big hug....he's so adorable..;)
JakeysMom 09-25-2009, 08:54 AM I love the peek-a-boo game you play with your dog... my pup's ears aren't long enough for anything like that. :(
1tulip 10-01-2009, 10:35 PM Now that you mention it... my dog has larger ear:head ratio than the usual show bred dogs. Hadn't really noticed it before. I love those velvety things. I admire how the people on these pages are so good with the camera. That's a fabulous photo of your dog. I have never taken a picture of my dog that looked at all like her.
jachimama 10-02-2009, 07:41 AM I couldn't even begin to tell you what he is other than beautiful:)

I think I just got lucky with the camera...it doesnt always work out good. I call it the 80/20 rule. Take a hundred photos and maybe you will get 20 good ones. :D I get a little camera crazy!
Marmot 10-06-2009, 11:33 PM I was going to ask the same about Rosie, only because I was told she was an English lab, but to me she looks more of the field type. Most of the dogs in her line are field labs.
