Hi all -

I have been following the food recall compulsively and want to switch our 4 1/2 month old puppy over from Solid Gold's wolf cub puppy food (made by Diamond) to Eagle Pack Duck & Oatmeal (the adult food our older lab is on). What is your opinion - is the puppy to young to be on adult food? I also bought a bag of the EP lrg breed lamb & rice puppy food (holistic select - no wheat or rice gluten) so I could go to that too but I don't want to switch and then switch again in 6 - 8 weeks. What are your thoughts?

In general, the "puppy" food is merely a marketing ploy. Look at the ingredients, and makeup (%'s of such things as protein, calcium, etc.) and choose a food based on that.

Really? Where does it say Solid Gold is made by diamond?

I called the company and asked if they made their own food and was told no that diamond manufactures their food. It is made to their specs with their ingredients but in the same facility. And they did assure me that there was no wheat or rice gluten in solid gold products but it still makes me kinds of uneasy and since our puppy wasn't doing well on it anyway it seems like a good time to switch.

Don't freak just because Diamond makes the food. Diamond is a big company and lots of smaller companies contract them to make their food. They have very high standards of cleaning between batches of food in every plant.

Heck I feed Diamond Naturals Lamb and Rice and Bear does great on it. Diamond puts what each companies tells them to in it and those companies have what they want in their food shipped in. Diamond itself uses only American and Canadian ingredients and does not use Wheat gluten or Rice protein concentrate.

SO my question is. Before you freak and change foods does your dog do well on the one she is on? If so, don't switch, especially at that age.

If as you say your dog wasn't doing well on it by all means switch, but NOT because Diamond makes the food.

There is a very old saying. If it ain't broke don't fix it. That is VERY true in foods your dog is on, espcially as puppies.

Just my opinion.

I apologize again for possibly causing undue alarm in an already bad situation. My primary question was not should I switch because of who makes solid gold - it does concern me slightly but not enough t switch foods with a puppy - but I was interested in if people thought he was too young to put on an adult food because he is not doing well of the solid gold puppy food - runny poops galore! Again I am sorry if this question was interpreted as a slam against diamond or solid gold - I think they are both good foods and my pup is still on solid gold as this point.

Nah, I am sorry I got a bit snippy. I have just gotten a ton of pm's about what I feed, but anyway. Eagle Pack Holistic is awesome food, I would buy it if I could get it without having to order it online or drive 100miles (not a joke by the way). There are also a lot of other good foods out there that have not been touched by the recalls, a bit of research is always a good idea!
