I have always fed purina, and have had very good results useing it, but lately I have had more than one person tell me that it's not so good? I really am please'd with the results of feeding this, but I'm curious about what others think?

Thanks

Do you have any faults with Dimond? I have been thinking about switching to it? The locale feed store just started carrying it:D I live in one of those TINY towns, and the closest I get to a pet store is the locale Wal-Mart:rolleyes: So, as you might have guess'd my choices are limited. Unless I order from online. anyhow, what are your thoughts about Dimond? I have heard some really good things about it.

Still not a good feed but it’s an improvement from Purina.

Do you have any feed mills near you? Sometimes they carry some of the better brands of dog foods. Diamond Premium isn't a bad food at all. We use Nutro Natural Lamb & Rice. My German Shepherd is allergic to corn and any yeast products, so we have to watch what we buy. She had issues with Canidae, too, and I have no idea why since it's a very good food. Something in it bothered her. Glad you're looking into options other than Purina!

Here's a link to an article about what's in pet foods:

http://www.vsquare.com/jordemm/API_1.htm

It's a highly controversial subject and you should do what your heart tells you is best for your dog(s).

Gotta disagree with you on this one, Barb. It’s hard to find a good ingredient in this feed except for the vitamins and minerals.

The fishmeal might be good (depending on its source) but look how far it is down the list. :(

Premium Adult Formula for Dogs

Ingredients:

Chicken by-product meal, whole grain ground corn, wheat flour, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), brewers rice, beet pulp, fish meal, egg product, flaxseed, natural chicken flavor, brewers dried yeast, potassium chloride, salt, choline chloride, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganese proteinate, manganese proteinate, manganese oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese proteinate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, menadione dimethylpyrimidinol bisulfite (source of vitamin K activity), riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.

Hmmmmm, maybe I'm thinking of another food ... I thought there was a Diamond Premium that didn't have corn. Got to be something else. Give me a break, Hank, I'm tired this morning, LOL!

Feeding and feeds are very important topics to all of us here on the Lab Chat Board and many different opinions will be voiced in favor of what each person thinks best. That being said, I know of a few dog owners who have fed Purina for decades without any reported problems. The thing you need to know is that all processed feeds are a compromise and that some of the ingredients and processing are questionable. I agree that feeding BARF is probably the best way to go, but some folks (like us) aren't willing to take the time and effort to go that way. Sebastian has been a Science Diet dog since he was a puppy and we tried to switch him, but no dice. We did some research and we decided to feed Calley Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul (we switched her from Iams). It is a feed made by Diamond and the whole line has its own website: http://www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com/

This is available at our local feed store. If you have a feed store that deals with Diamond, they can get this in.

Anywhich, the puppy dry food is:

Chicken, turkey, chicken meal, turkey meal, whole grain brown rice, whole grain white rice, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), oatmeal, potatoes, cracked pearled barley, millet, duck, salmon, egg product, flaxseed, natural chicken flavor, kelp, potassium chloride, salt, choline chloride, chicory root extract, carrots, peas, apples, dried skim milk, cranberry powder, rosemary extract, parsley flake, potassium chloride, salt, choline chloride, chicory root extract, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, menadione dimethylpyrimidinol bisulfite (source of vitamin K activity), riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid

Calley gets this, sardines, salmon, marrow bones, raw carrots, bananas, plain yogurt, peanut butter and eggs. But she primarily gets the kibble. Just my :2cents: . Do your research and decide. There is a TON on info on this board - enough to confuse me, for sure. Just the fact that you are checking into it is a good thing. Good luck!

LOL....I forgot to say that I DO feed this Diamond product (the lamb and rice) and its not because of price or availability or anything other than the fact that my dog does great on it.

No, not all Diamond products are great, but I am sure sold on this one!

How is Eukanuba Large breed puppy food? is that good to feed or should I use something different.

after I gave my vet a call, He thinks that Diamond would be the best way to go, We have Iams, Diamond, Purina, and Old Roy available here, the Ol Roy is terrible:( "everyone around me feeds this stuff". So, I have decided to start my switch from Purina to Diamond adult formula. Which is only about $1 cheaper that Purina, not that price really matters. I mixed it with there kibble tonight, and they are one happy crew:) They love the taste, or it could just be something different for them:). I have been feeding Purina for the last three years now, and though alot of ppl don't like it, my dogs did ok. But! the gas would make your eyes water, so I think the food must have had something to do with it!
Thank you all for your wonderful suggestions!;)

Calley's mom-I found Chicken Soup for the Dog's Soul...whatever it's called, LOL. Has great ingredients however I bought the puppy formula for my foster pup and thought his poops were awfully stinky, LOL!

Seriously, when we were switching over from Iams, Calley went thru a stage like that with Biological-weapons-grade flatuence (I kid you not!), but after about 2 weeks she was back to normal. Her energy level and coat are better than ever (might be due to the other fish stuff listed above), but it is working. :D

Why do you want to change?

My dog does well on Purina dog chow. I tried Eukenuba with her, Diamond, eagle pack...none of which she would touch. So back to the dog chow.

Besides the large bombs (poops) in the yard (that I hate) she does well on it.

If your dog is not doing well on it he/she will....

have flakes in her coat
gunky eyes and ears
itchy....basic skin problems.....

Good luck
:)

Calley's Mom -- can you get this locally where you are? I've never seen it here. I found it online, but it's $30 per 35# bag (not bad) but the shipping would be $16!! Yikes! I'll have to look around. The ingredients sound good.

I'll have to tell Jeannie that y'all are calling me Calley's Mom! (this is John) Never thought that the readers couldn't tell if John or Jeannie was posting. LOL!
Anywhich - Barb, the website http://www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com/ has a dealer locator at the top of the page. Check it, I think there are some dealers in 'sconsin. And, yes, it is not cheap here either, about $28 for 35 lbs. But we think it is worth it. We constantly get comments on her coat. Don't know if it is the kibble or not, but we're doing something right.:p:

diareas(sp?). I think its because of the switch though. I have started mixing the purina with the Diamond. I hoped that would make it easier:( but I guess not. Thank you all for your great info!

Try mixing in some pure pumpkin with the mixed kibble. Helps our with the squirts. Hang in there! Transitioning to a different food is sometimes tough. Take your time.

LOL Calley's DAD!

Hey-no making jokes about what I type! :D
I'll have to try it again-maybe his stinky poops were just from his body going through detox from whatever other crap he had been eating before hand.

I would tend to agree, that your pups system is going to need some adjustment time.

I mixed 1/4 new/3/4 old for 3 days
1/2 and 1/2 for 3 days
1/4 old and 3/4 new for 3 days....

key thing is to do it very very gradually! I think once you get onto the new food you will be so much happier with your yard results!

I sure hope so, I have been having some "big" mess's to clean up since I started the switch. I have started them very slow on the diamond. I have also heard some really good things about it as well.:p:

Gosh I am SO confused! I didn't realize that this thread was here before I posted my other thread. I haven't heard of most of these dog foods that you are talking about. I live on the East coast. I have heard of Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet and a few others but have never heard of Nutro. I will have to check it out though.

That's because some companies spend money on advertisement rather than on quality ingredients for their kibble.:(
