    Something fishy's been going on

First of all, this is not a complaint, but since the devastating forum crash last year I've been a bit more alert to occurrences of anything unusual.
    1) last night I took a look at the thread about Cookie's accident and I noticed that my avatar was missing. Well, not completely missing, but replaced by a picture of a garden wall. Clicked on it and it safely led me to my profile where my original avatar was sitting undisturbed. Reloading and logging out and back in didn't help, so I decided to take care of it myself and uploaded a new picture - no biggie, just a few minutes, and I thought that was it.
    2) this morning I wanted to check new posts, and everything looked normal until I opened a forum, and noticed missing post icons:

Sort of looks like the database has decided to have a life of its own and take charge of some stuff here. Not sure if the same thing's happened to someone else, but I don't think I'm the only one. No tragedy really, but I just thought you should know and if there is a problem, it should be nipped in the bud. Mike

Hey, Mike...some time has passed your post, but I don't see anything different. Your avatar looks good (of course, you did change it back...) but I'm not missing any icons.

Thanks for dropping by and telling me. My avatar's still fine, but in the Welcome Wagon there's one icon still missing (Foster Failure) - wow, now it's a lot more than just one -and in Fire Hydrant looks like this:

and this is the Forum's appearance:

There might be a problem with the graphics as the question marks usually show up when the desired picture can't be located, but I might be wrong, I'm no rocket scientist

What browser are you using? Maybe try another one or try clearing the cache. The server did slow down yesterday afternoon but then corrected itself.
I have no explanation for a garden wall photo. It's not a default on this software or anything I can think of. I have no idea where it came from.

Everything looks fine to me in Chrome and Firefox.
    Thanks Everyone!!

I'm using Safari 8.0.8 on OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 Never had any problems with the browser and this forum and my Safari have always been working just fine. As for the picture swap, I'd say that either my avatar's original "address" had been changed or the other pic's had been assigned the same address as my avatar. At least that's the way I understand database programs work - I've had some limited experience with old ClarisWorks (later AppleWorks) and FileMaker. Otherwise everything works fine - I can read everything, reply to anything... just the graphic interface seems to be acting out a bit.
The main reason I decided to post here was that I was worried something potentially dangerous might have been going on. Thank you for your answer and advice. M

Did your iOS update? I've had trouble (phone wise) with the last update. Maybe there was a bad update with Apple that's affecting how you see things on web pages? I also know that when I use my iPad to read the forum I get weird symbols and letters. I just learned to deal with it. I've never had trouble with avatar's or with missing icons though.

I checked my other Mac running the same browser only a lot older version (the comp is eight years old) and everything looked perfect. It had a Reset Safari command enabling to empty the cache among other features, but I couldn't find a similar option on the new comp - everything seems to be automatic, so I did the next best thing: restarted the computer and gave it a chance to fix everything by itself. It worked, the forum looks as though nothing had ever happened. Thanks for your support and giving me this idea - should have checked the other Mac last night

Glad you discovered the problem. I was amazed at just how many of my annoying little (and not so little) issues disappeared after I switched from Internet Explorer to Firefox. There are still some "passing" glitches when something runs in the background (mouse temporarily goes numb is the main one)...things I just need to wait out till they self-resolve. I used to blame everything on my security program (Norton) since there are updates/scans running seemingly all the time but apparently IE didn't get along all that well with my server (Verizon).

Good ol' computers..."have you tried rebooting?" is a tired, yet valid question in the world of tech support.

It's amazing how many things have been automated, so you don't have to deal with them, but sometimes these advantages seem to backfire a bit so to speak. It was really easy with the old version of the browser - when things got tough, all I had to do is reopen the application and if that didn't do the job I simply reset it, emptying the cache and fixing some more things. However, there's no reset command now, so I just restarted the comp, and everything was fixed automatically. The new advanced systems are really easy to work with, but sometimes I sort of miss the old times when I was able to deal with some of these problems myself without using the modern wizardry
Thank you for your support and advice - the self-fixing comp of mine took care of everything and it works just beautifully. Guess I'd underestimated the power and abilities of modern operating systems.
