from australia

Hi everyone,

I'm grayzie from canberra, Australia. we have had our new golden lab pup for less than a week and as I have never owned a dog before, i am a bit overwhelmed. He is approaching 9 weeks old. we've called him Jo.
The first 2 days i was stressed because he was so lethargic and slept so much, but i think it was the heat and stress of a plane ride and a hot car ride and a new family as he has perked up now.
I was starting to breathe easy again that he was ok and then yesterday evening he spewed and wasn't interested in his dinner. This may have been the worming tablet, the collar i had put on him several hours earlier for the first time but IT WAS NOT TIGHT, the oleander bushes he was chomping on that are apparently poisonous that my husband has now dug out or??? He hasn't spewed again, was hypo this morning and ate his breakfast well.
My other concern is that he often is quite red in the bottom half of the whites of his eyes.
is owning a dog always this stressful? Do you think my pup is OK? It is very hot here at the moment. He is drinking lots of water.

Have you taken him to the veterinarian's for an initial check up? If you haven't then I would highly recommend that you do so. Even if he seemed completely healthy, it would be a good idea just so your vet. can meet him and check him out. In this instance, it is even more important!

Hello and welcome.

Just like the rest, I would see a vet, hope all goes well with the little guy. Owning a dog is not always stressful, but there are stressful parts like this one with Jo.

vet says he's fine, just mild conjuctivitis in the eyes
he's a very placid pup, still does a lot of sleeping.

Glad everything's ok. I've got friends in Perth and they're saying it's pretty warm right now. Enjoy the peace while you can.....when I first got Lilah I wondered what all the hype about Lab's was about...then I found out...but I wouldn't change it for the world....:

Hello from a fellow Aussie. Glad Joe is feeling better

Astra also has a similar eye condition (crusty and ocasionally weepy eyes) and I just wipe them gently with a cloth daily. Apparently it runs in the family.

Hope you're getting some cooler temperatures there, it's hot up here in QLD!
