    Chicken Feet!

I finally got around to purchasing some and gave one to each dog last night to see how they do with it. Linus, after making sure that Sam's wasn't better than his, chowed down. Sam, on the other hand, ran around the house with his and then put it on the couch. Clearly he had no idea what to do. He eventually ate it after finding a quiet spot to ponder in my bedroom. It got me to thinking -- how will I make sure they don't spread animal guts all over my house when I switch them to raw?

I think chicken feet is a special case, it dryness and it lack of smell could trigger them to think it´s a toy i believe. With other kinds of meaty stuff i wouldn´t worry for them thinking it´s not a edible thing.. or you can allways wait for the missing food to descompose itself.. lol

I give these kinds of treats out in the back yard. We have whole frozen sardines about 6 inches long. If we give them whole they only get them outside. If inside, we cut them up to go into their bowl.

My dog has a special rug that she is to use when she gets a raw meaty bone. At first, she would want to take her meat and go eat it on my living room rug, so I had to take the meat from her and take her over to her rug and tell her "on the mat" and then give her the bone. When she would lay on the mat and then I gave her the bone, I would tell her "good girl, on the mat". I had to repeat it at the beginning for a while.

Now, she is great! She knows to go to her rug when she sees that she is going to get a raw meaty bone. I will periodically praise her while she is chewing her bone on her rug and tell her she's a good girl while she remains on her rug chewing away at her bone. She now knows her special rug means bone chewing time and she gets very excited, running to her rug in anticipation. The rug (rubber backed mat) I just throw in the washer when it looks like it needs a cleaning.

Three of my dogs naturally hoover over their bowls or chew right beside them. I have tile so I don't mind, but one likes to take hers to a dog bed, so I use her place command and started out with an anti-fatigue mat (to provide a visible boundary) and now she eats near her dish without it. A couple folks here also use towels with the same success, I just prefer the mats because you can disinfectant daily vs having something to wash.

Cookie eats his meals over his bowl. Every time he would get it out and try chewing on it somewhere else, I'd take it and put it back in the bowl. He realised he wouldn't eat it anywhere else, so he stopped doing it.
