    Turkey neck?

I had my husband save the turkey neck to give to Gauge I'm a little nervous only bc I'm afraid of him choking on it. Those who have fed turkey necks do you cut it up or feed it whole and have you had any issues?

Some whole, some cut up, depends how big they are. The one from Thanksgiving was his first whole one. I already knew he was good at chewing on bones from chicken wings and legs, where I held onto them, wearing a cheap cotton glove for grip, so there was no way he could swallow it whole. He had to chew and twist to rip bits off. I didn't hold on to the neck but I was right there watching just in case I thought a gulp was coming. Oban's Vet, the one who got us switched to Bones And Raw Food diet, has warned me several times about the danger of them trying to swallow a turkey neck whole.

We give them whole, it's where we get most of our bone content for Emma diet. At first I held it for her, now she holds it her self between her paws. It takes her about 15 minutes to finish one she's a very careful eater.

I might cut it up the first time he is a gulper.

I've always fed them whole. I think they are actually more dangerous cut up, because the dog may think that he can swallow the size that you've made it rather than chomping it first. In the past I have beat the bones with a mallet to pre-crunch them for a pup.

If he's a gulper then for sure feed it whole.

I agree too, if he's a gulper feed it whole and hang on to one end. Wear gloves for grip, be careful when he gets close to your hand.

I have always fed mine whole and have never had any issues. The first time that I fed Tino a turkey neck I held on to it and let him chomp on it until he got the hang of it.

You got really good feed back on this one. I bought a whole case of turkey necks thinking what a great source of bone. They sit in the freezer because my dog is a gulper and I don't like cutting them up worrying about whether it's the right size. He chews, swallows, chews, regurgitates, chews some more - pretty gross to watch. Yep they will be in the freezer for awhile.
