Unfortunately, I can't find any green tripe where I live, but I can only imagine the smell! I feed Cookie the cleaned version of it. Of course you can feed it, it's just that it is not that beneficial.
Yep, you can feed the testicles whole
First, green tripe is the most disgusting smelling stuff I have ever dealt with. I don't know if I can do that again. There are so many warnings on the label, I'm almost afraid to open it.
Second, I think the lamb tripe they gave is cleaned, as in not green. I can't return it, darn it. Can I still feed it to them for protein if it's been washed? It is still frozen but it's awfully white, from what I can see, and I'm not detecting the same stench as from the beef version, plus there are no warning labels on the packaging.
Finally, in regards to the bull testicles, please tell me I can just feed them whole, and not have to cut them?
Thanks!

I've read the white tripe has been bleached. But stores sell it for people to eat so can that be true? Shudddddder. At the thought of people eating it at all. At the very least it's been washed clean of all the partially digested vegetable matter that makes it a valuable addition to dog diet so I guess even if it is safe it's not as good?
I can get brownish/greenish tripe from the raw supplier I use. Colour varies by batch. I find it doesn't smell as bad if I leave it in the freezer for weeks before I use it. Offal smells just about as bad.
So the green tripe I got is cow. It is ground, which is pretty much all you can get around here unless you know someone, and then basically you have to get there with a bucket and get it out of there ASAP. Which, unless I had an old beater pick-up truck, I am NOT doing.
I'm not thrilled about the cleaned lamb tripe I ended up with, and yeah, they bleach the heck out of it. I can even smell the bleach. I have a thawed piece to the dogs and while Linus isn't exactly thrilled about it, Sam thought it was just fine. Linus takes time to warm up to new foods, so Tripe is super popular in recipes, mostly among the ethnic populations. You can buy it in nearly any grocery store. I have never tried it, and after smelling it both "green" and clean, I don't think I ever will!
So glad to hear about the testicles, Berna! I was really dreading having to cut into one. I am really testing my limits this time around.
Tripe is horrible and it's even nastier when you dehydrate it. Don't ask how I found this one out. I've gotten used to the smell, I order it whole and deal with it frozen. We just fed testicles and I half them, and give it to Emma with a heavy bone meal for breakfast. The testicles have a sweet smell to them.
Yes you can feed the bleached stuff, it just has almost zero nutritional value, since all the good bacteria in tripe is washed away.
Tripe basically smells like cow manure. It's pretty awful but oh so yummy for Dodger. During the summer, I buy it frozen in cubes, then I dish out a few cubes per week, leave them on the back table outside to thaw and feed it to Dodger outside. In the winter I buy canned tripe, it's not as healthy but I can't deal with the smell in my house. I cannot feed anything frozen or Dodger promptly throws it right back up. Which sometimes is OK, because he'll wait a few minutes then re-eat it, BUT regurgitated tripe, no way!
I fed Dodger testicles, I even cut them in half although I doubt it was necessary. He loves them.

I didn't know you could feed testicles! I'll have to ask my vet to save me some, they do tons of castrations in the spring. This is the equine/farm vet, not small animal one :-)

LOL, do they call them testicles? Or prairie oysters? A high school teacher of mine was from New Zealand, a sheep farm. He said they used the rubber band and the aboriginals would pick up the dropped off testicles and eat them. I don't remember if he said cooked or not.
The meat store here calls them "bull fries" if they are from a bull. Not sure what they would call them if they were from another animal.
I haven't fed one to the dogs yet. But they are loving the green tripe, trachea, and lamb necks!
