What To Use As Training Treats For a Puppy Eating Primal

Hi, everyone! I have a couple more questions about feeding a commercially prepared raw formula.

    1. Ellie is only 6 months old and I need something to give my little girl as training treats throughout the day. Is there something I can put in a treat pouch and give her as we walk without having to worry about washing my hands along the way (having a treat in my hand is pretty much the only way she will respond to being recalled off leash at this six month mark)? I used to use her awful kibble. Any suggestions? Anything with peanut butter or sweet potato is out (we've been dealing with food sensitivities).

    2. Ellie's breath is starting to smell pretty awful these days. Is this common with commercial raw feeding?

    Thanks everyone!!!

I used kibble for Luna. Instinct has freeze dried raw pieces. You could use commercial training treats also. There's treats that come in a white and yellow tub that is freeze dried chicken liver. I usually use Stella & Chewy's dehydrated cheese training treats but Loony doesn't have food sensitivities.

Think outside the box too. What about Cheerios? You could buy a small bag of Orijen or Acana kibble also.

I use string cheese for my raw fed dog, but that's mostly for training sessions.

I like dehydrated lamb lung and dehydrated liver. There's also dehydrated tripe but it makes my hands and pockets smell like a dairy.

Cheerios! What a great idea! She can handle everything in the ingredient list. I wish she could tolerate the Acana or Orijen, but both make her strain when pooping (perhaps the lentils?). I'm not sure about the string cheese, but now that her poops have firmed up beautifully, I can give it a shot. We've tried the Stella & Chewy's Carnivore Crunch duck, which Ellie loves, but I was concerned with if I had to wash my hands after handling it. I have an email into the company.

We have a rabbit farmer up highway from whom we got bunny for our last lab. I might just buy a few, cook and then dice them for a few days at a time.

Thank you so much for the suggestions!

I can't think of anything that isn't going to make your hand scummy after the first transfer into puppy's wet mouth and back. Even the Cheerios. You can put a bit of meat in with the Cheerios so some smell will transfer to them.

My favourites are home made. A roast of beef or pork on sale, cook, cool, cut, freeze till needed. A hard apple also works nicely for a change. Cut into pieces twice as big as you want, leave them out on the counter to dry, they'll shrivel up. These don't freeze as well, turning mushy when you thaw, best stored in fridge and used quickly.

I use string cheese and turkey hotdogs. A friend gave me some beef lung that she dehydrated, so I'm also using that right now too.

Rio eats Oma's pride prepared raw diet which i also supplement with Nature's Variety Limited ingredient kibble. For snacks, I swear by Zuke's all natural minis.
Amazon.com : Zuke's Mini Naturals Dog Treats, Roasted Chicken Recipe, 16-Ounce : Pet Rawhide Treat Sticks : Pet Supplies , he likes the chicken and duck.

His breath really isnt that bad, but I brush is teeth once aweek and give him one or two twistix each week, these help keep his teeth clean in between brushings and freshens the breath. I'd wait for there to be a sale on them, i normally buy them when they are less than $15 Amazon.com : Twistix 25 Count Dog Treat, Large, Vanilla Mint Flavor : Pet Snack Treats : Pet Supplies

I like the cut up meat too, I used to use rotisserie chicken. Its hard to keep it from spoiling when you're out training on a hot summer day, so that's when I started using Cheerios.

Natural Balance has a product that comes in a tube, not refrigerated. I cut it in 1 inch slices and freeze then chop up what I need. I found that change is important. Both Mardi and Archie have blown me off completely until I started stocking the treat bag with a variety. Hot dogs, string cheese, boiled chicken and the Natural Balance keeps them guessing.

Hint the trainer taught me, I keep the treat back (fanny pack type with snap closure) behind me. In front, they know when you're reaching for a treat.

I try and have a trail mix in my treat bag for Molly. I have used the following on differnt occasions

Charlie bears, cut up strawberrys, blueberrys, dehidrated sweet patato, dehydrated banana, all beef hot dogs washed microwaved and cut up to take the slime away, roasted chicken home mede cut to size, appels, cheese cut to size, cooked venison ,dehidraded beef liver cut to size, duck jerky, homemade treats if you need help with those let me know. I roll my dough into small treat sizez as well as cookies. Ill add the peanut butter cookie recipe to the dog treat recipe forum for you.

    Good luck

keep fruit in moderation or could make the tummy run

Can you let me know what sensitivity issues you are having so I can formulate a recipe for you
