Ticks look grayish when they're engorged with blood. I always remove the tick and flush the area with peroxide. Then just keep an eye on your dog. If any symptoms develop--loss of appetite, lethargy, lameness, fever--get to the vet.
Most times, in my experience, the dogs is fine. Kathy
