I also read in last month's Dog Fancy that Garlic is bad for dogs also. They said it is in the same food group as onions, and can be toxic if given alot. I remember reading in some posts that people were using garlic as a natural remedy for fleas. Just thought I'd mention it. Black as Night, did you ever hear this about Garlic, because it wasn't on the list in the article?

Actually, there's controversy on the garlic issue. Some say it's bad, others say it's good for dogs. I've read a number of times that raw garlic can be harmful in large amounts (can cause anemia), but garlic oil is okay for dogs. Also read that garlic is NOT safe for cats. I've asked our vet this because I think garlic is of the onion family (grows like onions), too. She said in moderation, garlic should be fine for dogs. However, for our family and dogs, we play it safe and supplement our dogs daily with 1 garlic oil capsules. Did a Google search asking "is garlic safe for dogs" here's what I found.... http://www.reference.com/search?q=is...0for%20dogs%3F |

Since the holiday season is approaching, and many of us decorate our homes, I thought I'd post the following:
How to Make Your Christmas Tree Pet-Safe Christmas trees pose all sorts of hidden dangers for dogs and cats. Learn how to minimize the risks. 1. Cover your tree stand with a tree skirt to prevent your pet from drinking the water in the base. This liquid can make your animal sick. 2. Have pet treats on hand to distract your pet away from the tree. The needles can easily get lodged in the animal's throat, making it hard to swallow. 3. Place decorations that contain mistletoe, poinsettias and holly only in high sections of the tree, where your pet will be unable to get the tempting leaves and berries. They can cause heartbeat and blood pressure to drop. 4. Remove strings and ribbons from gifts that are left under the tree. These items may seem like toys to an animal, but can easily choke him or her. 5. Avoid using tinsel, since your dog can choke on it. Also understand that some of the older tinsel contains lead. 6. Remember not to use chocolate ornaments if there's a chance that your pet could pull them off. An ingredient called theobromine can have a toxic effect on dogs. 7. Tape the electrical cords of your Christmas tree lights to the wall so your pet won't chew them. Other tips: Realize that lit candles may capture the attention of your dog or cat. To avoid any accidents, leave your pets in the other room if you plan to light candles. Keep wrapping paper out of reach since many pets are tempted to chew on it. |

raisins and grapes (as little as 7 of either- source: posion control) can cause renal failure.
raisin/ grape toxicity- attacks the kidneys. |

Glass ornament remedy
I got this remedy from a Saint Bernard Rescue board... if your dog ingests glass (like Christmas tree bulbs), feed him cotton balls soaked with something yummy like cream or gravy. The cotton will wrap around the glass and prevent it from damaging the stomach and intestines. Then they just poop it out. Don't know how true or safe this is, but it sounded interesting...

I feel so bad now! I gave my dog raw eggs this summer, cause my mom told me that it made the coat shinier! The only reason I stopped was the vet had me cut out ALL foods from his diet exept for his dog food, because his coat was not improving. Poor boy.

I was surprised to find aloe on the ASPCA's list of toxic plants.
http://www.aspca.org/site/FrameSet?s...nts/M01947.htm Also, this list is for cats and dogs and some plants, like the Tiger Lily are known to affect cats, but not dogs. |
