      Natures Domain?

Ok so seriously everybody and their brother in my neighborhood feeds Natures Domain from Costco. The dogs look good. I'm still looking for a new food for Niner. We tried Eukanuba lamb and rice, but his ears had daily gunk in them; his coat seems greasy; and hubby says he smells (rude) . I know some of you have fed Natures Domain. I am about ready to go back to PPSSS - everything is good except his poop - it's mushy and not fun to pick up. Let me know if you have any feedback on Natures Domain

      thanks

I have no knowledge of ND but I wouldn't go back to a diet that produced mushy poop...something not digesting right.

Good luck finding something that'll work.

(oh, for the good old days when California Natural was still a great food.)

I need to find a new food for Libby. She has had constant diarrhea and tests show nothing. They put her on prescription Royal Canin and Diawin a couple days ago and things are MUCH better. She had been on Pro Plan Puppy before this. She came to us on Costco Salmon-something but we don't have a Costco card. They don't want her on the prescription food for long but I need to move her to something else. Possibly there was an ingredient in the Pro Plan that was not agreeing with her. Chicken? Do we need to go to a limited ingredient food next?

No one wants to see you bouncing around with dog foods, but a suggestion is to try Fromm or Acana, stay with one of the top shelf foods.
Check with your vet before changing, they did the tests right?

Some dogs need more of a middle of the road food like Niner. He doesn't do well on higher end foods. Don't know why. Babs how old is Libby?

Libby is 4-1/2 months. I know the vet said she didn't want her on the Royal Canin very long. Maybe because it's only 20% protein? I feel like she needs to be on puppy food and not regular but I think I really want to stay away from chicken right now and there are not a lot of choices of puppy food that don't contain chicken.

Call customer service at champion pet foods and ask, any of the large dog food companies may be able to help.

Babs, you could see if you can find a food that's not specifically a puppy food but is labeled an All Life Stages (ALS) food, which is also OK for puppies. That would open more options to you. Plus, our breeder said it was OK to change over to an adult food by 4-5 months. When my younger pup was having issues with diarrhea when she was about Libby's age, 4 months, our vet also said she didn't need to be on puppy food any longer. By the 3rd round of diarrhea and meds, the vet suggested I switch to a different food. She didn't have diarrhea on ProPlan when she came home so I hung tough and finally, after 3 rounds of metronidazole, we tried 2 weeks of Tylan, her diarrhea cleared up and didn't come back, and she stayed on the puppy ProPlan until I switched her to adult ProPlan. There are quite a few of us who went through puppy diarrhea at just that same age. Jeff and Hemi come to mind. It's very frustrating when the tests show nothing, nothing, nothing.

Nancy, I'm sorry I don't know a thing about Nature's Domain. For me, the problem with buying stuff at Costco or other warehouse places is that you can't buy a smaller size bag of the food to see how they do after a week or so, you really need to commit. Same for human products. Chase gets ear gunk frequently but since everything else seems fine, poops, and he smells fine , I don't change his food around, just clean his ears a lot.

Right now they eat kibble at breakfast, either ProPlan or Annamaet, and I'm giving them canned food in the evening. I decided to go with canned after Chase had teeth removed and Lark had that incontinence and I wanted to somehow increase her fluid intake. I don't feel that I know enough to try to cook for them myself so canned. There are lots of varieties, different protein/veg combos, but it's not cheap so they get half kibble and half canned.

Babs, you mentioned Libby came to you on the Costco food? The salmon and sweet potato? Was Libby doing well on it? You can get it off of Amazon, but it costs more. If not from Amazon you can get Taste of the Wild which is pretty much the same thing (a little better both brands made by Diamond) and they have a puppy version that I believe is fish based.

      Nancy

Thanks Sue. Niner did get some gunk in his ears on Proplan, but not nearly as much as Eukanuba. With Euk I am using a Q-tip daily to get the gunk out and with PP it was every 2 weeks which is quite a difference. I would have just left him on the PPSSS, but they changed the formula a little and his poop got mushier. Maybe it was too much food as the calories went up in the new formula. IDK - just shocked at how many people here in the neighborhood feed Nature's Domain lol. I could just put Niner on Holistic Select. That's what Charlie eats. Not sure why I'm reluctant to go that route. It's a good food and Charlie has done well on it.

Thanks, Nancy. Yes, Libby was doing fine on the Costco food but since we don't have the Costco membership, we switched her to Blue Buffalo as we thought it was the best. Then, after about 1/2 the bag, her poo was runnier so we moved her to Pro Plan which has never really worked that great either. Taste of the Wild is sold at a pet store near where my dad lives (this store is a really cool place. My husband and I ran across it one weekend when we had been at dad's) so I might pick up a small bag this weekend and start blending with the prescription stuff. Other than this 'issue', she acts totally normal and is full of energy.
