is it a marrow bone?
is it ok to let them chew on it. Wyatt has been chewing on it for 3 weeks now.
Does it hurt anything?
is it a marrow bone?
I usually leave the bones outside and they can chew on them for a few weeks. But usually as long as the marrows been eaten out already.

We usually throw the marrow bones back in the fridge or freezer if Lola doesn't clean out the marrow in one session.
I put them out on the porch daily, and todd 'em back in the freezer when he's stopped obsessively licking it.
The only bones I never give to my dog are weight bearing bones of large animals.

What are the weight bearing bones? Like leg bones? I was going to pick up raw bones from the Farmer's Market this weekend and have no idea what to look for. Last time I bought roasted bones (at my BF's insistence) and they were splintered and chunks coming off within minutes of them starting to eat them. And as a vegan, I know nothing about bones. I haven't eaten meat in over 20 years, so I haven't a clue what is best. We use the Nylabones, but I like to treat them, especially Odin as he is aging and having health issues.
Yes, like the leg bone. You can have them cut into 3-4" sections and keep them frozen until you give them. Refrigerate or freeze if marrow is left after they are done. I used to give them as treats until my vet showed me what slab fractures look like and how much they cost to repair. These type of fractures can come from raw bones, Nyla Bones, antlers, really any hard chewing option you can give though. I started giving raw, frozen turkey necks instead. Definitely stay away from the smoked or cooked bones for the exact reason you stated above. They splinter easily and large pieces can be swallowed causing a possible obstruction.

I no longer give these either. The one time I broke down and did give a marrow bone, Tux fractured off the tip of his bottom incisor. I'm just glad it wasn't worse. But that being said, I do feed raw, so my dogs eat plenty of safe bones and keep their teeth clean that way. So it really is up for an individual to decide if they want to give marrow bones or not. Need to weigh the risks/benefits of clean teeth vs possible tooth fracture.

Maybe I will see if I can get turkey necks (eww, shudders) at the Farmer's Market. I just want things that are safe for them to chew on instead of chewing up everything else in sight.
