    Joint suppplments (Cosequin)

At what age can we start giving a joint supplement such as Cosequin?

I'm thinking it's not recommended to give to a growing puppy, but perhaps would be okay to start them when they are finished growing (18-24 months)

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

When Lark was limping as a youngster, 7-8 months old, the ortho vet wanted her on Cosequin or Dasuquin which I started then and she's been on ever since (she's 6 years old now). I think Henry's breeder said he could start something around 6 months of age. I haven't started anything for him yet, I should check with her soon.

I think you can start it relatively early.

Check with your breeder. There could be something in your contract. In mine, all supplements are not allowed, except vitamins C and E, at least up until a certain age. I think she calls out calcium supplements as a big NO.

I started Brooks on Cosequin at 18 months. He and Sophie both get 2 tablets a day.

Yes...I agree. I think 18 months is a good age to start. I just worry that giving them too early would interfere with growing?

I do like the Cosequin brand.

Why would you give those supplements to a dog with no issues? Is there any research that proves it may prevent or postpone issues in the future, or?

Cosequin is recommended to protect cartilage in dogs that are overweight, working breeds, and large breeds, as well as the average "weekend warrior". In order to gain the protective benefits of Cosequin in healthy animals, a low level of Cosequin may be used.

I spoke about it with my vet, and he felt it would be a good idea to start Sophie as she's getting older ( she was 6 when I started her). Brooks does so much field work, running across rough, slick, muddy, frozen ground, and into heavy cover, and he's also doings high jumps and broad jumps in obedience and rally, so I figured it couldn't hurt to put him on it too.
