    Royal Canin?

    Good Afternoon,
I have been away from the message boards for a while and. Just recently came back searching for answers after the recent DCM findings. My dogs have been on Victor for years and recently on TOTW for the last 6 months. In light of all of the issues recently I have decided to switch foods. I am contemplating ProPlan sport which he used years ago and Royal Canin Breed specific or Professional. Anyone used or using Royal Canin with any success? Like most of you, in years past I would have easily balked at the idea of some of the ingredients. However with all of the new data I’m a bit scared of the BEG foods. Any thoughts?

    Thank You all

I went back to ProPlan for mine. However, one of my dogs has SIBO and is on a Royal Canin prescription diet and doing really well. I'd try both, even rotate, and see how it goes and what works best for your dog.

I too went on the search for a grain inclusive kibble for my puppy, Lido. Unfortunately, Royal Canin gave him massive eye boogers and lots of head shaking from itchy ears. Poops were good on it. Pro Plan gave him pudding poo, as did Eukanuba and Science Diet, along with the itchy ears. I've concluded that Lido is sensitive to corn and wheat.

I've found success with Annamaet Encore. It's grain inclusive, but doesn't have corn or wheat. He still has itchy ears to some extent, but not as bad. Poops are okay, but not perfect. I give him a probiotic every morning, and I'm going to try giving him some pure pumpkin to see it that helps, too. I guess it's the best I'm going to get from a grain inclusive kibble.

I fed my last lab Science Diet, then switched to TOTW Pacific Stream, before it included peas. Chipper lived to be 14.5 years old - go figure...

I used to feed Royal Canin to Scully and Mulder. They both started out on Pro-Plan, which I was happy with, but then I was given a free bag of the Lab specific formula when they first came out with it. Both dogs liked it, and I liked that I could feed a little bit more of it than the Pro-Plan (always need to watch portions around here). Scully stayed on it until we lost her at 15+. Shortly after that I was experimenting with different foods for Chloe as grain-inclusive made her gain weight, and tried her on a lamb-based grain free. I gave some to Mulder and some issues he'd always had with hot-spots and loose poops got suddenly better. Some playing around with formulas determined he was mildly sensitive to chicken and we had never realized it, so I switched him off of the Royal Canin for the last few years of his life (he too made it to 15+), but he ate it and except for the chicken issue did well on it for probably at least 10 years or so.

Right now, I'm back to Pro-Plan, but I wouldn't hesitate to try Royal Canin again if I felt the need to switch things up (all my current dogs are fine with chicken).

I feed my Lab Pro Plan Sport chicken formula 26/16 and he thrives on it. Poops are perfect...he's a healthy weight...but I do watch his portion sizes.

Tickle's breeder raises her pups and dogs on Royal Canin, but we feed Pro Plan to our guys. Sport 30/20 for the active dogs. Bright minds adult Turkey for the rest.

Thanks JenC! Do you know if they use the Breed specific formulas or one of the others? Tickle is beautiful btw.

turns out she does not feed Royal Canin anymore, she told me that they all get Pro Plan Sport Salmon. Thanks on Tickle.

When I fed kibble, I've tried quite a few different brands, both with grain and grain-free, and I had the best results with Royal Canin. I fed Royal Canin Labrador. However, the European version is different from the US one ingredient-wise.

Also to be noted that I've been feeding BARF since 2013 and I'd never go back to kibble, but where kibble is concerned, Royal Canin wins in my experience.

I tried to switch Niner to Royal Canin. I went super slow. About halfway through he had explosive diarrhea. He loved that food though. He also has very soft poop on Pro Plan so he is on Authority chicken and rice and has done well. Goldie my daughter's shepherd is on Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach and she does great. Charlie is on Holistic Select Anchovy, Sardine and Salmon meal (grain inclusive).
