Scratching could also be due to shedding or environmental allergens. I concur w/ smartrock above and just got done sending out emails to the pup owners of ~15 litters of mine regarding grain free, boutique etc dog foods and DCM. The vets on the facebook DCM page ALL agree to stick w/ the Big 3,4,5 companies (depending how you want to look at it since Eukanuba/Iams just merged w/ Royal Canin!). So one of those, or Purina or Hills. Leave the other stuff on the shelf until the researchers shake this all out.

I just got an email from a friend who is a veterinarian technician. Sounds like what some of you have mentioned about staying with the big name dog food companies is the best idea!

We have always fed Pro Plan Focus for puppies chicken and rice, and then transitioned to Adult Pro Plan 26/16 chicken formula, with excellent results.

You want your Lab puppy to grow and develop properly.

Purina has been around for years and years...I feel that Labs really do better on a middle of the road food, rather than one of the "boutique" dog foods that are available today.

Purina® Pro Plan® always meets or exceeds AAFCO standards, and every Purina® Pro Plan® dog food formula combines high-quality ingredients for outstanding nutrition.

I would personally stay away from grain free formulas, especially for puppies.

And fyi, puppies get the itchies quite a bit, shedding, growing, stretching skin. I personally wouldnt assume just some scratching is related to food at all, if she isnt literally scratching herself raw, let it be. You can also rinse her off at the end of the day and remove most of the outside stuff like pollen, grass, etc.

And corn doesnt cause hot spots, corn doesnt do anything unless the dog has a particular allergy to corn

Sounds like the guy at your pet store shouldn't be giving advice! Itchiness can be from the environment. Tis' the season!

Presto was on Purina Pro Plan Sport 30/20 for meals with raw snacks (frozen in Kongs). Now that he's finished growing up, I've switched him to the 26/16 version so he doesn't get fat. He's an easy keeper and eats the same amount he did as a puppy. He still gets raw frozen Kongs most days. Linus eats Pro Plan Focus Salmon & Rice, which doesn't have corn, wheat or soy, but it's not grain free. It has barley, oats, and rice. Sometimes he gets Presto's food, but in the past something in PPS hasn't worked for him, long term. And, sometimes Presto gets Linus' food. I like to rotate a bit. I tried the Pro Plan Turkey, but it seems that turkey doesn't agree with Presto in any form. Both boys get raw meals from time to time. Sam is on a prescription food.

I went back to Purina after years on Fromm, Nutrisource, Canine Caviar, Farmina, and others due to the DCM scare. They are doing well on it and I'm saving money plus I don't worry that what I'm feeding them.
