    Change Food

Hi. It's been a long time since I have posted. Hedi is doing great. We have been feeding her and our collie Acana, rotating the flavors with each bag. However, our budget has tightened and I just can't afford such an expensive food. I need another no grain, no chicken dog food that is not so expensive. Any suggestions?

Not sure what your budget is, but we like Fromm. Their beef fritatta, pork and peas, and lamb and lentil have no chicken.

When shopping at our dog food boutique, the cheapest grain free that seems decent is Earthborn Holistics.

Take a look at NutriSource Grain Free Seafood or Lamb formulas. They have no chicken protein but do have chicken fat which often does not bother a dog with a chicken protein intolerance.

Their 30 lb. bags sell for $48.99 on the online Chewy site.

My son recently switched his dog from Orijen to NutriSource Grain Free Heartland for budget reasons; and has been happy with it so far. NutriSource is made by a family-owned company in Minnesota and has never had a recall.

You should investigate whether your dog really and truly has an issue with grains rather than use an inferior food just because the bag says "grain free" because you will find the cheaper ones have more carbohydrate and much lower quality ingredients than the better foods with grains.

Despite what the internet says, there seems to be no scientific basis that grains are responsible for allergies.

I use a grain free food but only because the one I use truly has a ton of animal ingredients and not a load of peas, lentils and pea products.

Most of the lower end chicken free foods are pretty bad IMO, low protein, high carbohydrate, canola oil is the primary fat....

I 2nd the Earthborn recommendation. It is one I use in my rotation with great success. You can also look at Infinia grain free formulas. (Not sure about the price difference in relation to Acana.)
