Just to add some more anecdotes, I know three people who feed Blue Buffalo and love its results. I will say that one of the dogs has massive feces (not bad -- just enormous), but other than that, I don't see any visible issues with their dogs. One of them (12yo Golden mix) has been eating BB for the past 7 years and jumps around like a puppy. Again, this is anecdotal, so base your decisions on your dogs' results.
I'm sorry for your loss. I hope some other people with direct experience with Science Diet weigh in.

Same here....it's not healthy or fair to the family purchasing the food for their dog believing it's of healthy packaging; etc. Personally, I think pet stores should be setting food and toys up on a higher level for this reason.
I for one when purchasing toys, harnesses or leashes from a petstore will go for the one furthest to the back on the rack.
One thing I want to point out to the original poster, however - labs themselves are prone to cancer of the spleen; don't go on feeling that it was all dietary because then you begin to blame yourself.
I will say Science Diet is not a food I would choose; that said, so many vets push it that most owners don't know to look into the product further because they feel the vet knows best. I've been there too.
My condolences, because that's hard to accept.
