    The Honest Kitchen?

Hey ya'll...been a while. My phone won't let me log on here and I just got a new computer, so I'm back....

Question--does anyone use THK? We just found a mass on my golden--he is on tramadol and deramaxx--but he isn't eating well. Looking at options and this one seems appealing. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

I like that there are various types of the food, including grain free. My dogs liked it but it was not the solution I needed for one. It was good for some oldies who needed pampering. The instant broth was a real winner for adding to foods in a hospice situation. It is also easy for even toy puppies to eat. I did find that I needed to soak it MUCH longer than the few minutes indicated in the directions. I made it ahead if time, soaking it in the fridge, adding hot water to the cold thick porridge before serving it.

I believe the broth is made from the Ice Pups mix. It is much more nourishing than ordinary broths. It can also be frozen and served like cracked ice or blenderized sorbet. Pops work better for a young dog.

Thank you Charlotte. He's an oldie that needs pampering--and TLC--and to take in as much food as he can, so I think it's worth a shot. And if for some reason he won't eat it, Ginger and her little sister won't mind helping him out.

    I appreciate the input.

I have used it as a topper when feeding RAW. I think it is high quality, very pricey. My two labs love it.

The Rimadyl may be what is affecting his appetite especially if this started started about the same time. Try giving a dose of Pepcid before feeding and the Rimadyl after he has eaten.

Thank you for the tip. I did pick up some goats milk with tummeric/etc the other day and he won't touch it. The decreased appetite started the day the swelling was noticable (Thursday 2 weeks ago tomorrow-- and a couple of days after he was slightly limping.) Took him to the vet the next day, which is when the tramadol and deramaxx was started.

He won't touch The Honest Kitchen. First sample, he gobbled up (the Embark)--but the last 3 (Keen, the duck one and a chicken one) he won't even hardly smell. It's getting harder and harder to feed him--and he needs to eat.

I am sorry to hear this. I have had really good luck getting dog that didn't feel like eating, either pregnant, morning sickness or just huge with puppies, as well as puppies that are teething, or dogs that just don't feel well due to age or illness, that will eat Royal Canin Starter Mousse. It is really easy to digest, smells delicious, and seems to be irresistible to dogs, I even start weaning my litters to it, and they tolerate it very well. Most Petsmarts carry at least a few cans of it, and if he likes it, you can order it off Amazon by the case and cheaper. I hope he eats for you soon.

Thank you so much Shelley. I will stop by Petsmart on the way home and see if they have some to get me by. I appreciate the tip--I'm willing to try anything.

Did your vet aspirate the lump or do an X-ray? If he was my dog I would take him off the Rimadyl and continue the Tramadol for pain relief. JMHO, I am just not a fan. Shelly's suggestion is a great one, that stuff is like crack for dogs, lol! I used it once to get my older girl to start eating after a surgery to remove a cancerous growth. She refused to eat anything and after 3 days I really got worried. She ate it like it was a prime piece of steak. Good thoughts and prayers for your baby.

The vet tried to aspirate the lump, because she felt an abscess was a possibility. However, she was only able to get out serum and cells, which ruled out abscess. So then she did an x-ray which confirmed the mass.

He isn't on Rimadyl. He is only on tramadol for pain and deramaxx for anti-inflammatory.

Thank you so much for your help and your prayers. I appreciate them very much.
