How do you know when they need it? (i.e. what symptoms do you watch for?)

I've debated on whether or not adding Coconut Oil to Reggie's diet will help his nail issues or not (he had cracking and peeling, and nails breaking off or lifting off the quick constantly for a while, though the vets don't think it is SLO.) We're currently giving him fish oil daily with dinner based on the vet's recommendations. The fish oil seems to be helping, though a couple nails are still peeling.

We try to change it up a little. We give Lola a tbsp of coconut oil twice a week. We also give Lola either sweet potato or pumpkin for the meals that we don't give her coconut. We tried salmon oil, and it was one of the few things that she turned her nose up and wouldn't eat.

Tux gets 1tbsp a day. It helps his dry skin. It is extra calories, but I feel like I read something about how the way it is metabolized means it won't easily cause weight gain the way other fatty things would, it will actually help support good metabolism. I used to give Cabo some too, just b/c if Tux is getting something he wants it too, and he likes the way it tastes. But it was causing soft stools for him and he actually had to have his anal glands emptied for the first time ever in six years. So now I give it to Tux, and just let Cabo lick the spoon so he doesn't feel left out.

Luna gets a scant tablespoon of unrefined cold-ressed coconut oil with breakfast everyday for coat and skin. At dinner I give her a salmon oil pill more for inflammation than anything else. Hard to say how much good they do scientifically, but I am happy with her condition at the moment. I'm feeding a kibble with 16% fat so don't think I'm going overboard in the fat department.

I have been really nervous to give coconut oil to Molly as Cassie my other dog has a really bad allergy to it and breaks out in monster hives. I guess I could try adding a little to Mollys food.

    Great thread

This is what they say -

Coconut oil is also known to assist in normal regulation of the thyroid, which can also help overweight dogs shed the pounds.
