Jumped off the BB Band Wagon

I have fed my dogs Blue Buffalo for years. Despite what others said about the brand, I felt comfortable feeding it to my dogs. I never had problems until the past few months. The kibble in each of the last 3 bags has looked different. The shape was the same, but one bag had very light colored kibble. It almost seemed over dried. The next bag looked more 'normal'. The current bag had very dark kibble. It seemed very oily. And Buddy, the chow hound, only ate half of his dinner last night. That was the first serving of food from the new bag. He ate fine earlier in the day when it was from the old bag of food. He is not refusing treats. He has no other symptoms. This morning he ate all of his breakfast, but much slower than normal. So I put all the food back in the bag and DH is returning it to the store. Has anyone else noticed the food appearance change from bag to bag?

I don't know what is going on with BB, but I no longer trust them and can no longer dismiss all the other problems people have had with the food. There may be some 'told you so' comments and I will say you are right. I know they outsource the manufacturing. I don't know if there is anything wrong, but I trust my dog and if he won't eat, there is something wrong. I feel very bad that I stuck with the brand as long as I have. Finding a new food is hard.

Right now we are switching to Wellness Complete. It seems to have the same protein levels as the BB I was feeding. I hate to switch cold turkey, but don't know what else to do. I need a food that is easy to find in stores across the country. We are traveling a great deal since DH retired. I try to carry enough food with us, but sometimes we stay away longer than anticipated and I have to buy on the road. Our 20 ft trailer is small and I have to pack tight. I know in the past that Wellness used Diamond manufacturing plants for their food, but my research says they moved to in house production after 2012. Does anyone know if that is true or false?

My mom feeds Blue Buffalo to her dogs. When we got our dog, I just couldn't spend that much on food. I thought for most of the same ingredients that you find in other dog foods, why pay that much? I fed Purina Pro Plan Focus for Large Breeds up until the bag runs out then I am switching to Purina SmartBlend (the lamb flavor). Oliver loves both of them. Although, I am sure Oliver would love anything he was fed. If Sam's Club carried Purina Pro Plan, I would have stuck with that instead of switching.

It is my understanding that Wellness is no longer manufactured by Diamond. I use Wellness Core grain free in my rotation and my 2 do great on it. I have never had any quality issues either. Best of luck with your switch, my guys eat 6 different brands that I switch at the end of each bag. I have never had any problems switching their foods without transitioning. If you are worried you could add a tablespoon or 2 of plain pumpkin.

I havent have any issues with BB, I rotate to it once in a while. I haven't noticed any changes in the kibble at all. But I don't feed it often enough to say much more than that. Its on the bottom of my rotation list because if the cost

There are many, many dog foods out there. I change brands every 2-3 bags because I cant and wont put my trust into one company. If something does go wrong, I have many other foods to choose from that I know my dogs can be fed without any type of transition

I fed BB about four or five years ago and I had that color change happen with the lamb formula. I was told after calling BB it was due to the sourcing of lamb. Well I never bought it again.

I buy all my food at a locally owner pet store, and I've gotten to know the manger there pretty well over the past couple years. He is very knowledgable about food, and the pet food business. We've had a lot of discussions about food. I have been feeding Fromm for over two years. The store basically carries Fromm because I use Fromm. In our discussions, he basically told me, once any manufacturer starts selling in the big box stores (petco, petsmart) their product will suffer, as they have to source a lot more ingredients to meet the demands to supply a massive amounts of stores. This is when quality sufferers and quality goes to crap.

Last year my I had my DD golden her for a couple months before I shipped him to them in the UK. He was on Blue Buffalo and was having bad skin issues, and his poo's were soft/runny at times. I told her about Fromm, and she switched him to Fromm after I shipped him over to them in the UK, and while he still has some skin issues, his poo's are good.

I am not saying Fromm is the greatest food ever, and Blue Buffalo is crap. I'm just sharing what my experiences are with both. YMMV.

Interesting, it was the Lamb formula that I was feeding. We took the 30 pound bag back to Petsmart for a refund, got a 2 pound bag of BB making sure it was a different lot number and a 30 lb bag of Wellness Complete Lamb. I felt I needed to go ahead and transition them to the new food instead of instant switch. And the kibble in the 2 pound bag looked different then the kibble in the 30 lb I just returned. Buddy ate the new BB without hesitation. I think switch protein source like many of you do is a good idea and plan to do that in the future.

I believe some wellness was made by Diamond. Not sure about now though.

That was also my understanding but I did not feed any Wellness products at the time so I am not 100% positive. I can only share what has been told to me. I do apologize if I am incorrect about previous manufacturing.
