    Dog Food Help - Fromm

Okay, I need more info and help from everyone.

Currently we feed Kirkland Signature Chicken, Rice and Vegetable. Is it the best food? NO, absolutely not. Is it the worst? NO. Is it consistent? ALWAYS.

We have never had a problem. My boy is extremely strong, physical, healthy, and lean. He is 70 Pounds. I've never switched him because he has always done well on it. He has a nice healthy coat etc.

I guess I just haven't changed it because, well, a 40 pound bag costs just less than 40 dollars. He hasn't had any issues with food ever... Which is why I haven't ever changed. He also gets supplements daily.

This leads me to my next debate topic...should we change? There are absolutely better quality foods. By far. If RAW was an option for us, that's what I would like to do.

I like Fromm and know that a lot of people here feed Fromm. Which version of Fromm would we want?

-kirkland-signature-super-premium-chicken-adult-dog-food-costco-4-640x480-jpgThis is the Kirkland Bag nutritional info.

Any help would be appreciated as this is a subject I'm not as knowledgeable about...and I know a lot of people here are.

We love Fromm! It may not work best from your dog, but Bacon thrives on it! We rotate through grain free and chicken free flavors. So Bacon goes 1 bag on 1 formula and then switches. He goes between Beef Fritatta, Pork and Peas, and Lamb and lentil.

Fromm grain free foods have a higher protein content (my formulas have 29-30%). Fromm has never had a recall, and we have ever had an issue with the food.

I think you should stay on Kirkland. The ingredients look fine, and if the price is right and it works for your dog, I would stay on it. No reason to fix what isn't broken.

There is nothing wrong with Kirkland especially if your dog is doing good on it. Personally I wouldn't switch. The rescue we got Frank from told us that's what we should put him on but I went with my tried and true favorite, Pro Plan.

you can try a little 5 or 10 pound bag and see how it goes. How exactly do people tell if 1 brand is better than another?

you would need to chagne foods for quite a few months to see the impact on the overall body and health.

Change if you want. don't change if you don't want. personal decision. You coudl change to prove how well your current food is when you see no difference. Or if you feel you are being objective and criical enoguh and he is indeed at peek health don't bother. no one food works for all dogs.

I would confirm if they have had recalls personally (I think kirkland has had recalls?)

I would question the need for all teh supplements if the food is that good though. unless there are health issues that require supplements.

I know someone with more knowledge will give you a better answer than this...but I look at the ingredients. I look at the first few items. I also look at things like recalls. Brand loyalty I think is important with dog food as well. If people keep buying over and over again - it must work for them and their dogs. I also look for other people feeding that food. How long the company has been around. Other reviews from outside sources. I am far from a dog food expert...so I look for experts that write reviews and see what they have to say.

My in-laws feed Fromm to their yellow lab because he had allergies on another food and Fromm was the first brand the vet recommended they switch to. He has been fine ever since.

I know that a lot of people on this board feed Pro Plan, Fromm and some other popular brands. I respect that every dog is different, and not all labs will be fine on the same food. I just want to do the best that I can for my boy (as we all do).

We started Gabby on a Diamond brand when we got her at 8 weeks old. She did great on it - healthy and active and grew nicely. Then the recalls began and it turned into a matter of safety for us/her. We switched her to Fromm and have never looked back. Her coat is beautiful, shiny and softer. But...the biggest difference that we noticed immediately was the poop factor. Her poops suddenly were much firmer, she had smaller piles, and there's almost no odor to them. That's become my criteria for a good food...less smelly poop and I'm sold - lol!

Kirkland had a recall in 2013 due to a salmonella scare - they pulled every version of their food. Which is scary - there has not been any recalls in the time that we have fed him Kirkland though.

Thanks for posting Tanya, I honestly don`t know what to do. I know that their is better out there and I feel like maybe he would benefit in some way on a higher quality food.

Diamond manufactures Kirkland`s food. I`m assuming you knew this as this is really great information for me!
