Hope it works out for him! My guys never did well on Fromm (but they seem to be unusual that way) or I would try it myself so they could eat a bit more.

Thanks. I did try him on Fromm before and he was fine for a couple of months but then he started to have soft poop. If I cut his food back too much then he's a pain when we go for a walk because his head is constantly down looking for something to eat.

Soft poops were the problem we had with Fromm, too. And considering Mulder frequently poops in his sleep these days, firm poops are important around here, LOL. Have you tried adding in green beans or other low-calorie, high fiber fillers (pumpkin works too) to make him feel like he is still eating enough but without adding the calories? Mine all get green beans routinely. Poor Chloe has a very slow metabolism (like me, LOL), so even though she is young and very active, she still doesn't get to eat much or she balloons up.

If for some reason Fromm's isn't a fit, look at Evanger's. They have a whitefish as well. not as low in calories, but lower than some of the other meat varieties.

Based on everyone's recommendation of the Fromm's whitefish, I just bought a small bag to give it a try. Sam is getting pudgy again. I can't cut his food back any further so I hope the lower calorie food does the trick. I know he's getting less exercise than he needs because of our crappy weather so fingers crossed that less calories help get Mr. Pudgy back in shape!

Personally, I think it's the carb's in kibble that cause a lot of what you guys are experiencing; dogs do not digest carb's like they metabolize proteins/fats. Unfortunately nearly all dry dog foods are going to have a high percentage of carb's just by design of binding necessity.

I'm having the opposite problem with both dogs since having stopped dry dog food over a year ago; well the pup only ate dry food for 2mnths before we switched her to raw at 6mnths old. She is tall and very skinny, at only 45lbs and 26" tall - she eats 2.5lbs of food a day & does get oatmeal a few times a week, to help bulk her up - but it doesn't.

Rivers gets no grains/starches period, of any kind, and was neutered at a fairly young age (not my choice) - I have not had a single weight issue with him, despite everyone telling me a neutered dog is very easy to gain weight.....not this boy; like Creek, I've spent most of his life trying to feed him extra constantly.

But, his system does not break down carb's; most of them make him itch.

I took Ram for a weigh in last night and he's down to 80.4 lbs from 88.7 lbs in February. Big thanks again for the Whitefish recommendation. I should try it some morning in a bowl with some milk.

That's great news! Is he at a good weight now?

Our 9 year old shot up to 78 lbs; her ideal weight is 65 lbs. We cut her food back using green beans and gave her fruit and veggie snacks. She lost about 7 of those extra pounds and stuck. It wasn't enough to help the arthritis in one of her back legs and as she was down to 1 cup (divided into breakfast and dinner) we finally made the switch to a lower calorie food just this week. Since we use Purina Pro-Plan All Life Stages (28/18) we stayed with Purina Pro and went with a 7+ year Bright Mind formula. It still has the 28% protein but reduced the fat to 14% I think. We will have to see if it affects her energy levels..she lives with a 2 year old, a 9 month old and a 5 month old and is quite active with them around; if that changes, I will have to rethink this.
