    Halo Brand dog food

Has anyone heard of the brand Halo? Looking at the ingredients, it sounds good in comparison to the ProPlan Focus I'm using now and is $47 for a 44 lb. bag, which is $10 cheaper than what I currently pay for the PP. Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

I think that's Ellen DeGeneres' line of pet food. Fairly new, I think?

It is Ellen's food - it's been around a while though. Always see it at Petco. Haven't heard much about it except they won't disclose where the food is made.

Its pricey here, never tried it, but it looks ok on paper. If it was cheaper I would probably buy a bag just to try it out

Halo's been around for awhile but I never tried it because it's expensive. I had no idea Ellen owned a dog food company.

I've seen Halo in the stores here for a few years but don't know anyone who feeds it.

Although chicken is listed as the first ingredient, the actual percentage of protein coming from meat is probably quite low. Ingredients must be listed in order (highest to lowest) of pre-cooked weight. Once the 70%+ moisture in the fresh chicken is cooked out, you have the eggs and pea protein providing the majority of the protein. Pea protein is a concentrated protein source that is economical for the dog food company - similar to corn gluten.

When less meat is used, a dog food tends to cost less. I'd look for kibble that has "chicken meal" listed as the first ingredient or something like "chicken, chicken meal" as the first two ingredients.

Just noticed in a couple of posts that Halo can be pricey. It isn't the ingredients that are pushing up the price. I imagine the endorsement of a celebrity contributes to the price.

Thanks for the info. I fed Levi the two sample packs they gave me and he didn't seem to care for it any more or less than the PP. Will probably just stick to PP since he's doing so well on it.

I don't think she just endorses it; I think when she co founded the company was after some of the pet food companies had quality issues. I know that portions of the profits go to rescue organizations. They also have coupons on their webpage. I haven't purchased it yet because the last few years have been financially difficult and finding food that is good for my dogs and within my budget has been trying. It is one of the ones I have been eyeing as I like the food I am feeding my dogs (4health from Tractor Supply), but I still think I could get a better brand.
