I used cheerios too! I sprayed them with some diluted low sodium stock (chicken or beef) to make them more attractive (then stick them in the oven for a bit).
There is a reciepe online for some high valu salmon treats.
I don't stay away from store treats, just look at the ingredients. the longer the list the least likely I am to buy. But you can get some good single or few ingredient treats in sotres. I love the new little soft Northern treats.
Good to mix it up. Use lots of kibble and mix in small pieces of something high value (but not always the same thing as high valu).

Turkey hot dogs work well for my two. I don't like them as they are pretty slimy. I use Mother Hubbards mini treats and Zuke's grain free as the commercial treats. The things the dogs and I both really like are chicken scraps. I take all the scraps from the chicken I clean at work and put them on the grill and cook them til they are a bit crispy. These are the most high value treats I use.
I give our pup pretty nutritious treats. Mostly carrots, blueberries, chicken breast jerky, and sweet potato treats. I've never noticed any high's or low's when giving him treats.
As baby puppies they mostly get kibble. Once they are old enough for more formal training, I use hot dogs and string cheese. Lately I’ve been using some “junk” food though (pupperoni) for certain things with Chloe.
