    Supplements?

    Hi everyone!
We were wondering if any of you give supplements to your dogs (salmon oil, joint supplements, vitamin C, etc.)? If so, what kind? What brand? How much (dosage)?

    Thanks!

I give canned salmon rather then oil; goes much farther...dogs enjoy it better.

Joint supplements - my big guy is on Natural Stride powder; my girl is on Phycox Max - both have been on joint supplements since they were 6mnths old; no visible arthritis in my 7yr old boy.

    Vit E - 400 IU's every few days

They each get a teaspoon of kelp/alfalfa powder mix every 2-3 days.

That said, both of my dogs are over 18mnths of age; both are on a raw diet.

I would *not* be giving certain supplements if the dog is younger then 18mnths of age, exception is a joint supplement - can be started at any young age.

The question is - what for? How old is your dog and what issues does he have?

I too am curious about the age of the dog, why you feel they are needed, etc. I love Springtime, Inc for supplements. Mine are currently on Longevity (excellent whole foods supplement with all kinds of good things), spirulina, and joint supplements. Tux is then on a few additional supplements for allergy support. And they all get salmon oil daily. They are all six years old.

Hide is a male and is going to turn three years old in a couple of weeks. He is on Annamaet GF Aqualuk. The holistic vet suggested we supplement with Goldenseal to help his overall immune system- he was diagnosed with colitis as a puppy and has allergic dermatitis to grass/pollen.
He gets 2 ounces of wild salmon with skin on every week but his trainer suggested that we use salmon oil.
As for his joints, I was just wondering when is it a good time to start giving this? At the onset of hip problems or as a preventative?
These conversations have made us start wondering whether or not we should start giving him supplements.

I started both dogs on joint supplements as preventatives at a very young age - less then a year for both. I'm so very glad I did; my big guy is 7yrs old now, and even with a rough life of running cattle, several hard falls over the years, including falling down a flight of 12 stairs; falling in a 4ft hole and ripping his Achilles tendon - the boy doesn't show any pain, slowness or discomfort. He is tall too, at 27" and 62lbs - he's not a little guy.

My 2 both get the supplements you mentioned. At about 6 months of age, my little one had some limping and it was thought she had elbow dysplasia. We saw an ortho vet who suggested we use Dasuquin or Cosequin with MSM, our general vet suggested Vitamin C and fish oil in addition to that. The limp resolved without surgery but I have continued the supplements. Because my older guy was 7 years old at that time, I went ahead and started him on the same supplements but not because of any noticeable ortho issues, just because of his age. So, mine get Dasuquin with MSM, Vitamin C 500 mg, and the weight indicated dose of salmon oil daily, and Vitamin E 200 mg 2-3 times per week. They are able to run and play without restriction and I never see any limping. There are other joint supplements people on here seem to like such as Hylasport or Glycoflex, as named brands, or generic glucosamine/chondroitin supplements. I do the Dasuquin because the ortho vet would only recommend that brand.

Mine get fish oil and a human joint supplement containing MSM, Chondroitin, Glucosamine, and Hyaluronic Acid. Seniors get a higher dose than younger dogs. I add in some vitamin C as they get older as it also has anti-inflammatory properties.

Where do you all get your salmon oil? I just read that it's beneficial for dogs with seasonal allergies, which my dog has.

Stig get's coconut oil, and a NuVet Plus tablet everyday. The tablet is required by the breeder we got him from until he is 2 years old. She said it helped her older dogs so much with their joints that now all her dogs get it, and requires all her puppies to take it. I'm looking into giving Stig chlorophyll, too, since a friend told me about the benefits of it.
